what do you guys think of this. today i dropped a vitamin on the floor at the hospital during a med pass. the doctor picked it up and ordered me to give it to the patient!! he said it hadn't been on the floor for 5 seconds so it would be ok. he saw me stop it from rolling away with my shoe and thought it was ok! i threw the pill out and he got very angry and said you just wasted a pill. i then shouted back" are you paying for it?" the patient got upset and said this doc must think i'm a dog that eats off the floor.

The 5 second rule doesn't apply to ANYTHING.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five-second_rule
. ... "A study in 2007 using salmonella on wood, tiles, and nylon carpet found that the bacteria were still thriving after twenty-eight days of exposure under dry conditions. Tested after eight hours' exposure, the bacteria could still contaminate bread and bologna in under five seconds. .. ... . .. ."
And YES, that doc is gross and wrong.

Good for you standing up to that idiot!!!! Besides......that show "Mythbusters" dispelled that myth a while ago!! It doesn't matter if it was on the floor for 1 second or 30 seconds, once it hits the floor it picks up whatever bacteria is there!! That doctor needs to go back to school!
My 6 year old and my husband love that show . . . I watch it with them sometimes and I remember seeing that myth busted.

You should've told him you will keep that in mind if he's ever a patient and feed him only meds off of the floor. Please also :angryfirefeel free to feed his mom, wife, and kids whatever meds or food have been on the floor. Would you like a little MRSA or C.diff w/ your meds or snack today, ma'am? What a jerk! Good for you for standing up to him. What pt. would really accept a med that has been on the floor? I do cringe when I have seen nurses drop IV tubing on the floor or have it touching curtains, linens, etc. uncapped and the connect it to the saline lock. I have told people not to do it. I have a also made faces, etc. at people I was in the room with who did it anyway. How gross is that???
The 5 second rule that little kids had back in the day just doesn't apply at the hospital.
Personally, I utilize the 10 second rule, but I guess to each their own.
I can't help but wonder about this story. I've never met a doctor who gave rat's behind about how meds were passed, if a pill got wasted, etc. In fact, I've never met one who even paid attention to such things.

I am especially skilled at dropping ibuprofen for some reason. I have had patients tell me to give it to them anyway, but as I always tell them: the five-second rule does not apply in the hospital!!!
