so ready to quit

Published

I am so ready to quit. I hate the lies that they tell you. Oh yeah we will give you this day and that day off, you can stay on your reg hall. blah blah blah. Our schedule is now weekly sun thru thur. the schedule did not come out til 9pm thursday night. I check the schedule and I don't have a day off til tuesday which puts me at 8 days with no day off. I am getting 1 day off a week, and they still call me on that 1 day off and want me to come in. We don't have enough nurses to cover the shift. they hired one nurse for 3-11 and one nurse for 11-7, the 11-7 nurse quit after one day, the 3-11 nurse who just got off orientation has an interview at the hosp tomorrow and wasnt shy about telling everyone that if she gets the job she is outta there. we have 5 regular lpn's for my shift. which is 3-11. and we need 5 LPN's a night. 3 lpn's in LTC and 2 lpns in rehab. Well, 2 of those LPN's are out on sick leave and the other LPN's spouse has been sick (recently dx with cancer). So there is 3 that are out. And staffing nurse has been scheduling people doubles and different shifts without telling us. then they wonder why people are quiting and no one wants to work there. DUH !!!! You treat your nurses like crap and they won't stay and will discourager there nurse friends from applying cause they don't want to subject there worst enemy to this stupidness. I really want to call in tonight, just cause I really need a day off and I am so burnt out. But I have already been written up for having a call in...(3 call in's and you get wrote up). I see my kids for 1 hour a day and that's in the mornings when I am getting them up for school. I don't get home til 1 sometimes 2 in the morning, cause i am having to stay late just to get caught up on my charting. sometimes I see my dh if he stays up, and our bedroom activities is almost non existent b/c I'm to damn tired and frustrated to even want to do anything, so dh gets frustrated and upset. But to top it all off...HE BOUGHT A MOTORCYCLE !!! So now I have no choice but to stay at this job cause now he has 200/mo payments. THIS SUCKS !!!

Just needed to vent. thx

Let it out sister I know just how you feel. Just remember you got to take care of yourself and your Kids!

I want to quit so bad, I cry when I think about it. My anxieties are soo out of whack...i never had probs with anxieties until i got this job. i can't eat, I can't sleep. I dread having to go to work. I hate it. I wish I could take it all back and never gone to school in the first place, It was once my dream to be a nurse. Now i think I just cursed myself. At one time I thought I could make a difference, but now...i cant even make a differnce in my home life. What really bothers me is, at shift change the other night, the night nurse (who is a new grad) and I were in the middle of report when the cna got us because they were doing rounds and one of the residents had blood in her brief. the night nurse asked what she should do and I told her we needed to call the doc cause the res is on 6mg coumadin and she's got either lady partsl or urethral bleeding. So she calls the doc and I get the paperwork together, we send her to ER. Hosp admits to ICU with the dx of coumadin toxicity, Her PT/INR was dc'd a month ago. But her coumadin was not. And all i kept thinking was THANK GOD I did not put that order in. The nurse who did that is a dayshift nurse and since the PT/INR's are done on dayshift. it really makes me wonder. Cause the doc is not gonna dc pt/inr while they are still on coumadin. If we had not sent called the dr and sent her out she could have died and we would have been responsible. But you get the scowlful look from the admin and don whenever you send someone out to the ER. I dont' know why, you would think they would be grateful that we used our brain and sent them out before they died. Thankfully the resident is now out ICU and on a reg floor and will prob be d/c'd early next week.

Sounds like you maybe need to look for another job!! Not all LTC is as bad as you are talking about. Please don't lose sight of the good you are doing, even if you don't think you are, and please don't judge all facilities by this bad one. Hang in there, look for something else and remember to take care of you!!!

I hope you will find a better job soon. I am looking for one too. Good luck.

First-don't answer a call from them on your day off and always have a readily available excuse to use if they ask you face to face to come in on your day off,for example " Oh ,I'm having a colonoscopy tomorrow".AND don't make youself feel bad for taking the time off that you deserve.Remember -there are No victims, only volunteers. I'll be damned if I would stay at a job I hate just to pay for my husbands freaking motorcycle.THAT is NOT your responsibility-unless your name is on the loan and if that's the case you have bigger issues.Does he work? Can't he share the responsibilities of getting the kids up?I would get my name off of that bike and he would either pay for it himself or it would go back...That is just crazy! You are making yourself the victim in all of this-you don't deserve it,so stop doing it.Talk to the scheduler, human resources,DON about the scheduling issues. Why don't you suggest something like 12 hr shifts to cover until everyone gets back to work? They could bring in agency nurses to help cover.Calling off unless you are half dead just screws everyone else.In the meantime start looking for another job and get EVERYTHING IN WRITING.....And start standing up for yourself both at home and at work or this pattern will continue.

Just refuse to work more than the 40 hours you were hired for. A failure to staff appropriately on their part is not your problem. If they're really as hard up as you say, they won't fire a nurse who refuses to pick up. Just ignore their sob story and call their bluff.

As for your husband buying a motorcycle.... So what? Refuse to pay for it. Stop being a victim. If you're letting people do this to you there must be part of you that wants them to because you enjoy playing the martyr. If you're really fed up with it, then just put your foot down. Learn to say "no".

If you're not eating or sleeping and feeling so terribly anxious, that's horrible! I hope things get better and/or you can find a new job.....((( hugs ))). Have you considered home health (not saying that's not stressful, too, but you'd be focusing on ONE PATIENT at a time!) :)

ktwlpn....thanks for making me LOL! ("I'm having a colonoscopy tomorrow")....THAT would

make them stop bugging people!!!! At my previous job, I'd just either NOT answer the phone, or just say "No, sorry I can't come in"..... One time, though, I REALLLLLY wanted to work for a friend who was desperate, but I had an EGD scheduled....I don't usually share personal stuff like that w/ coworkers, but I told her that only because I would've MUCH rather worked for her than go for that test, and she knew I was sincere!
