I was hoping to continue a great thread that I read last year, Ready to Apply CT Colleges 2009. It was a bunch of people looking to get into the CT Community Colleges nursing program for 2009-2010 academic year! They really banded together and answered questions for each other.
I was hoping to start the same thing for this year.
So, applications for the 2011-2012 year come out in just over a month. November 1st!!!
What has everyone been doing to prepare for the application process. What classes are you currently taking? Has anyone taken the TEAS yet? What was your score? What school is your 1st choice?
Speak up people!
Matt,
I have been following your thread and finally i have some information on GWCC. This is my first choice but i have yet to find anyone who knows anything about the program or its rep. I got into BHSN, but GWCC is much closer to my home, i just want to make sure the hospitals who will be hiring us think highly of GWCC. What is your preception so far. I like the night option as well, so i can atleast try to work the first semester, even though i probably wont be able too.
Obviously have not heard about getting in yet. How do i compare to you? I know this doesnt matter but it may or may not set me at ease, depending on how you answer
I grad with my Bachelors in Marketing with a 3.4-3.5
Have been taking all my pre reqs at GWCC and have a straight 4.0 with taking 5 or 6 classes i needed the sciences ap 1 and 2 and psych

Congrats Cardinal on your acceptance to BHSN. If for some reason you don't happen to get into GWCC, maybe I'll see you at BHSN in the Fall. Did you send in the matriculation fee to secure your seat just in case?
Good luck on getting into your first choice! You seem like you have a good background, and I think that GWCC isn't as competitive to get into as some of the other CC's so you probably have a pretty good shot! :heartbeat
All your stuff is great and you should have a great chance of getting into GCC. To be honest, I haven't heard great things about BHSN and I haven't heard bad things about BHSN. I'm friends with several nurse admins' and they have found nothing extroidinary about BHSN students vs any of the other CTCC's. People are under the impression that because its attached to a hospital it must be good..thats up to them to decide. GCC is very well respected especially at Yale and Hospital of St Rays. St Rays hires a lot of GCC grads. The nurse I had today loves GCC students and says they are very knowledgeable even on their first clincal day(4wks of lab helps). As far as being competitive, its the same as any other CC. I get a kick out of these people talking about 600 people applying to BHSN this year. If you've watched these threads the past couple of years you would see the same figure over and over. 795 people applied last year to CC's for Nursing..do you think they also might have thrown in an application to BHSN?..its just another school you apply to, to increase your chances of getting in somewhere. Plus I've always said, why do you want to go to a school that bases some of its decision on what you look like..i.e your photo that goes with the app. Its unethical and discriminatory. This isn't about bashing BHSN what so ever its just another view point to consider. Just remember, you sit for the same boards just like ever other school and you will have the title RN after your name just like every other person. My advice when you do accept a seat, make sure you get a student nurse position somewhere..its a great foot in the door and its your advantage over your classmates and others. And do good on clinicals it opens doors literally!
I was curious as to why BHSN asked for a photo. Must be a way of them verifying identity. I wonder if you left out the pic, if they'd still accept the application. Hmm…
With regards to the number of applications to BHSN, this year's application figures have declined somewhat. They received somewhere between 400 to 500 (EDIT - Oops, actually around 550); so those who applied this year had a better shot at getting in.
I can't tell you how excited I am that people are posting on this thread. Cardinal thanks for the bio- I also applied to the GWCC program for this fall- still waiting to hear. Does anyone know the number of applicants for this year?
I have this semester off, because all of my non-nursing classes are taken, and I didn't see anything that interested me, but now I feel so "out of the loop" because I am not at school. I plan on trying to get a student nursing position within the hospital (once my first nursing class is completed).
I wish they let student take nursing classes duriing the summer months. How wonderful would that be to be able to do a full year and a half and graduate a semester before all the other programs?
That would be awesome if you could take the nursing classes early. If that were the case I probably would have chosen to attend NVCC, if accepted. Since Bridgeport has the accelerated option, we'll graduate a semester earlier than the CC's in Dec '11. That is really what pushed me to choose BHSN.
I can't remember if I asked this before, but when do the acceptance letters roll out for the CC's? End of March or early April?
First of all Thank you Lady Bug for the congrats and Matt for answering my questions. You put at ease a bit, which is positive for now. I do not know why they asked for my photo, but your right that does seem a little unethical. I should have just cut it out of a magazine..aha
Any way, I am 100% looking into getting a SNT job after my first semester. Can i get a job where i do my clinicals or does it have to be another hospital. Like if i do clinicals at St Rays can i also be a SNT there as well
You can be a Student Nurse anywhere there is an opening. Some hospitals don't take anyone after the first semester because the training interferes with your classes. Hartford and Yale had ER tech positions that they said if you work hard you might be let in on some nurse meetings etc... Depending on the nurses, if they know you're a student nurse they might let you watch things or maybe shadow them a tiny bit. I'm hoping to do St Marys in June.
Anyone know if they sent out the letters telling you were missing something and you did not get in? I almost had a heart attack yesterday, when I received a letter from capital, my first choice. It was actually a letter telling me that I was on the deans list, but opening it was scary. Like someone else here, I too received a email in january that said that I was missing a prerequisite, but when i called they told me it was only a clerical error and that they were not done entering everything in. Since then i heard nothing and my appeals for information were met with pleas for patience. Anyone heard or know anything more than I do? Please let me know, probably like most of you I am pretty anxious to hear back from the school.
I have received a letter telling me that two of my transcripts would not be considered because they aren't relevant to my admittance criteria. (Sadly, one of them is my entire Master's degree, hard to hear that doesn't count for anything) I received the letter about two weeks ago, so I am under the assumption that's also when I would have heard if my application was incomplete.
This is killing me... I heard that all the final application packages go to Hartford? Is this correct? I know that JBMmommy and hopefullyin are freaking out over the letters they have recieved, but I think my position is worse, since I have received NOTHING since the initial email in January. I wish a "everything looks good" email could go out!
So, whats the timeframe? Are our applications in Hartford? How long does that take? Then who sends out the letters? I am trying REALLY REALLY hard not to think about it, but GOSH this is hard!

Thanks for the advice Ladybug. I think I am leaning toward an Ultrascope. I can always dish out more money later on and get another scope. (maybe even as a graduation present). HOWEVER, I won't be graduating if I don't get into the program... THIS WAITING IS DRIVING ME BONKERS!!! I think I need something else to think (worry) about.
