Ratings for Vancouver Community College

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Hi Guys:

I live in Vancouver, BC. I just got accepted for the Fall 2010 Nursing Program at Vancouver Community College. I was wondering if anyone knows the rating for this school? It's just that i have waited 3 years to get accepted and i'm already on the waitlist for another school for Fall 2011. How long has VCC been offering Nursing? Is VCC a great place for education and such? I have looked everywhere to get the rating for BC Nursing schools but i couldnt find any information. Can you help me to get a better insight in which school to pick?

Sadaf89,

First of all congrats on finally making it into the BSN program.

I understand first hand the many trials and the anxious waiting that it takes to just make it this far.

As for your question, I personal don't go to Vancouver Community College, I am a Douglas College Student Nurse.

However, since this is a Bachelor Degree Program in BC that means that it has to stick to the same level of structure that the other schools. This school is going to have to follow the Collaborative Nursing Program (CNP), which is a governing body that creates the Collaborative Curriculum, that all BC BSN Programs have to follow like Douglas and Langra.

VCC might use different class names in compharision to the other colleges, but the end result is going to be the same. Classes are going to be pretty much the same layout, and cover the same topics. I won't be surprised if we even used the same books!

This is a public school offering a degree, and unlike the private school, it is set at a higher level and must maintain these rules, otherwise it cannot grant BSN degrees.

Bottom line, enjoy the fact that you are going to nursing school. Don't fret over the name game of not going to "UBC" or whatever school you might be wishing you were to go to.

In the end, in the 3-4 years you will be a registered nurse, with the same qualifications as all the other RN's who went to other schools in this province.

Hugs, and good luck come the fall!

Enjoy your summer, cause the reading waterfall is about to rain alot of material to cover and learn!!!

How long have you been living in Vancouver????

Vancouver Community College has been educating nurses for decades. Langara with the RN programme and the Vancouver Vocational Institute Campus the Practical Nurse programme.

I remember student nurses at both campuses in the 1970s.

Nursing education is what you make of it. Employers rarely ask where you went to school for your education but every interview I've ever had they wanted to know if I passed my national exam on my first try.

With the demand for nursing education today, most people are happy to be accepted anywhere and don't have the luxury of being picky.

I think most publicly funded colleges and universities do a reasonable job of providing nursing education according to the guidelines they must work with.

A lot depends on the student too, a student needs to come prepared to study a lot, find their own learning opportunities in clinical, work hard in clincal and be very cooperative with the nurses in clinical as they will have lots to teach those with a good attitude and work ethic.

Congratulations on being accepted! I also just received my acceptance letter for the Fall 2010 RN program at VCC! So excited :) I have also been waiting for close to 3 years for an acceptance, so I was thrilled when I got mine from VCC, which was actually my first choice amongst all of the schools that I applied to. I have had such a positive experience with this school in the past, so I was thrilled when I found out I could take my RN there. I think that you will really enjoy going to this school. I did a lot of my upgrading and pre-requisites at VCC, as well as Langara and I just love it there. It is a wonderful school, and the instruction that I have received thus far has been just as good, or even better than other schools that I have attended. VCC now also has a really great student medical and dental plan (which they didnt have when I went there in the past) so that is a wonderful addition to the school, especially when you are considering going there for a few years :) The building that the nursing program is held in as well is brand new, and from what I hear, very nice so thats a bonus as well!

Hope to see you in class on August 23rd, and enjoy the rest of your summer! I certainly am, as I realize I wont have another summer off for 3 years after this :)

Hi there!

Again, congratulations on your acceptance. I attending VCC about 5 years ago in their LPN program. I found their program and faculty to be fairly organized and well educated. I agree with the previous posters when they say two things: 1) Your education is what you make of it - you need to work hard and 2) At the end of the day, the school you attended is not important. Your ability to critically think is.

I wouldn't wait until 2011. While their program is new - the faculty isn't. A lot of nursing instructor contract out to different institutions and I know that the faculty who created the RN program spent years shaping and creating the curriculum.

Good luck! You'll do great :)

Congratulations of being accepted!!!!I heard that because the program is new at vcc, there is no waiting list.I am really surprised to find out that people are waiting for 3 years to get into the program. That's so frustrating!!!!!

Its true!! As of right now there is no waiting list :) I imagine that will change once the program has been around for a bit longer. I had to wait a bit to apply to VCC while I was working on my pre-req's at Langara, and I was sure that by the time I got around to applying there would be a list, but not yet! This is going to be a great place to go! 3 year program, new building and labs, and a great school to boot! Ive had such a great experience with VCC in the past so I am so happy that it worked out that I could take my nursing there. I applied everywhere else, but VCC was my first choice, and I was able to get in so I'm happy :) All of the schools are great, but I encourage everyone to take advantage of the fact that VCC's program is still new, and their lack of waitlist. Give it a few years and I bet their list will be just as long as every other school...

Greetings! First of all, kudos and congratulations to you for being accepted to the RN Program!!! I'm also planning to take

it next Fall ('11)... I'd just like to ask if you were pressured in any way at all in completing the prerequisites since applying for the program is sooo competitive. Plus, may I ask how come did it take you 3 years to apply? I know VCC at present doesn't have a waitlist to the program.

Right now, I'm finishing Adult School and I'll be finished by December, in time to enter 1st year college this Winter.

Thanks... Best of luck to you this Fall!

Hi kekcoke,

I applied for a few Nursing programs when I was in highschool, but it was hard to get in since I didnt have the min 30 credits from a post secondary school. BCIT requires a min 30 credits and I know Doulgas college is based on a point system and you receive points based on your GPA, past university degree and volunteer hours; therefore, the more courses/ credits and volunteer hours you have the better chance you have in getting accepted. In a way, I guess I had to take all those courses! As for the prerequisites you do need a couple Human Anatomy and English courses.

I graduated 3 years ago from highschool so I had to work on my credits and volunteer hours. Most places in BC( That I was intrested in) dont accept students straight out of high school. I actually applied for VCC last August, so I waited for a year before getting accepted.

I hope I was helpful!

Thank you and good luck with your studies!! :)
