Rasmussen University - Fort Myers

Published

Hello everyone!

I was looking into Rasmussen College in Fort Myers, Florida. I was wondering if there was anyone who has attended or currently attending Rasmussen at the Fort Myers campus? What were/are your thoughts on the program? Since I already have a B.S. in Exercise Science, I was looking at doing the A-BSN, Second Degree option. I have already attended a Nursing Information Session with the school and it seems like a great opportunity. Just looking to get more insight about the program from people who have gone through it.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thank you so much for your reply I really appreciate the advice! Definitely calling Rasmussen to get more information. This blog is great and I’m glad I came across it!

Update!

So, my 4th quarter in the ABSN program at Rasmussen College has come to a close! I ended up with straight B's. I could have gotten at least 2 A's, but I made some decisions that impacted my grades. Allow me to explain...

For Chronic and Mental Health, I took a different approach to Exam 2 in both classes. In Chronic, I scored an 83% on the exam, which was not bad but not great either. I landed in the middle of the pack. However, I failed my Mental Health Exam 2. I originally scored a 72%, but the instructor ended up giving everyone points back and I ended up with a 77.33%. A passing grade is 78%. Needless to say, I was bummed. This was the first exam I had failed in nursing school. Why did I not perform as well on the second exams? It basically came down to not reading the books. I attempted to only use Picmonic and NRSNG to study to save time and because it worked so well for me in Acute. However, the questions on these exams were very specific and I firmly believe had I read the book, I would have performed much better. Anyhow, that was the kick in the butt I needed to change my study habits...

For the final exams, I read the books and supplemented with Picmonic and NRSNG. I scored an 89% on my Chronic final exam (tied for highest score in the class, I believe) and a 96% on the Mental Health final (the highest score among my cohort, from what I know). So, lesson learned. haha

I received a B in my Quality and Safety in Nursing Practice class. This could have been an easy A, but I opted to not fully participate in some of the assignments. Why? Well, the assignments became extremely repetitive and I felt my time was better spent studying for my core courses (Chronic MedSurge and Mental Health). I feel I made the right choice overall. My cumulative GPA will fall from a 3.63 to a 3.45, but I still have 36 credits left to bring it back up above a 3.5. Had I taken that study strategy into my Exam 2's, I believe I could have earned an A in Mental Health, and maybe even Chronic. But grades are not the end all, be all. Remember that as you work through your nursing program...

Overall, I enjoyed the quarter. It was exhausting at times, but I absolutely loved my clinical experiences and my instructors. I received excellent clinical evaluations, and was even asked to participate in a simulation for faculty training. Let me tell you, it is very nerve racking to be the only student in a room with the deans and instructors as they watch you perform simulations and get drilled during and after. But it was an amazing experience, and I am glad I got to do it.

Over break, I plan on studying up on Mom/Baby and Peds, as those will be two big ATI exams coming up next quarter. I hope everyone had a great quarter/semester and I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. And as always, happy nursing!

Hi there! I have a few questions. I am a new mom and once i get my shot records submitted, I am trying to take a spot in April. It would be very beneficial for my family and I to to start then and finish my quarter in June as scheduled, but to then take a quarter off (July August September) then go back and finish the rest. He is in Alaska and fishes and we need to split time so I will be going with him during this time. Ihave all of the general ed classes completed besides chem and nutrition. My questions are: will they allow me to take that time off and start back up in October and just continue straight thru, and would it be possible to take those two gen ed classes online while I am there visiting? Or will they want me to take those classes (Chem and Nutrition) before I even start the core classes? I am EXTREMELY serious about this program so if not then that is fine, I just would like to know ahead of time. I plan on going to speak to someone here soon as well. Any info is very helpful, thank you!

Hello! And thank you for reaching out.

So, are you looking at the Ft. Myers campus? You should be able to take Intro to Nursing, Essentials of Pathophysiology, and/or Physical Assessment along with your Chemistry and Human Nutrition courses. That is based on looking at the Rasmussen 2019-2020 catalog. As far as taking a quarter off, I don't see why that would be a problem, but I would ask the program manager or even the dean, because I know that the ADN program might be changing their curriculum soon. Or it just recently changed. I am not 100% on that.

Update!

Okay, first let me apologize for my absence. I have been primarily focused on school and searching/applying for new grad residencies. But! Here I am to give you guys a quick rundown of everything that has happened thus far this quarter.

So, I am now in my 5th quarter of 6 total for the ABSN program at Rasmussen College. We are currently wrapping up Week 4 of the quarter, with the start of Week 5 on Monday, Feb. 3. My classes this quarter are:

Parent/Child Health with 60 hours of clinical

Public, Family, and Community Health with 60 hours of clinical

Nursing Informatics

Integration of Evidence Based Practice (EBP)

First, I absolutely LOVE Parent/Child (aka Mom/Baby). I have had two clinical rotations so far, because we go to the birth center every other week. This week I was in the NICU, and although I knew from the beginning of my nursing school career that I wanted to be a NICU nurse, the experience this week just solidified it for me. I am supposed to be with the baby nurse next rotation, which means I will be attending all of the births. So, I am pretty excited about that, as well.

Community health has mostly been home health/hospice thus far, but I am scheduled to do some outpatient wound care and pulmonary rehab, as well. Community health clinical rotations have not been as exciting, but still very interesting. It is a much slower pace, but the staff seem to have developed a real connection with their patients, which I think is awesome.

I am not a fan of our Nursing Informatics class, if I am being honest. It is online and nothing but papers and discussions. Technology and informatics are just not topics I am incredibly interested in, but I certainly understand their importance. So, I am not trying to say the class is a waste, I just do not enjoy the content.

EBP is interesting, especially because we got to choose our research project for this course. And since I want to be a NICU nurse, I chose a topic I feel will be relevant to the NICU. So, I am excited about digging into that.

As for new grad residencies, I have applied to 4 different hospital systems. All out of state. Hoping to hear back from them soon. I only applied within the last two weeks, and I am sure they get a ton of applications. So, I understand it will take some time to review all of the applications.

Anyhow, that is a quick summary of my last 4 weeks. We have an exam in Mom/Baby coming up this week, along with 3 ATI's this quarter (Maternal/Newborn, Care of the Child, and Community Health). So, it will only get busier from here on out as far as studying goes.

I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break and that school is going well! Until next time, happy nursing!

Update!

So, a lot has happened in the last several weeks, ranging from exams to interview invites.

First, I have taken one exam in both Community Health (CH) and Mom/Baby. I scored an 88% on the CH exam. The exam wasn't crazy difficult, but I did not study as much for it as I could have and I took it after a 14 hour clinical day. Needless to say, I was exhausted and had difficulty focusing. But it's all good. I have another CH exam today that I have been studying for, so hopefully I perform better. For my first Mom/Baby exam, I scored a 94%. So, I was pretty happy with that. I have my Maternal/Newborn ATI tomorrow. I am pretty nervous about that one because I would like to score a Level 3, but I feel good about it overall.

I have received invitations for interviews at four different facilities. One here in Florida, and the other three in Nashville. I will keep you all updated on what happens with those. I am super excited, but also extremely nervous!

I have finished my clinical rotations for Community Health, which is great. It will free up some time for me over the next couple of weeks to really focus on some big projects.

How is everything going on your end? I hope everyone is doing well. Until next time, Happy Nursing!

I'm looking into it! I go next week for my interviews there. I've never been, but I hear great things.

Alright, so quick update:

I scored a Level 3 on my Maternal/Newborn ATI! ?

I was definitely nervous about that one because I wasn't sure if I had prepared enough, but I made it happen.

Hope everyone had a great week! Until next time, happy nursing.

Congrats!

I just scored a Level 2 on my Peds ATI... I’ll be doing the Maternal/Newborn one in about 8 weeks or so. What’s your method for prepping? I generally just do the ATI question bank in Learn 3.0 over and over. I got a level 3 on Fundamentals that way. ??

Awesome! I take my Peds ATI in a couple of weeks.

So, the way I typically study is using Picmonic and Nursing.com (formally NRSNG), take the assessments in Learning Systems 3.0 and Practice Exams, remediate the practice exams by reading the ATI book, and then retaking the practice exams. It has worked pretty well, thus far. This is only my second Level 3, but I have come one question away from a Level 3 on a couple of others. And I have passed every ATI on the first attempt. I am sure you have, too, though!
