Rasmussen University - Fort Myers

Published

Hello everyone!

I was looking into Rasmussen College in Fort Myers, Florida. I was wondering if there was anyone who has attended or currently attending Rasmussen at the Fort Myers campus? What were/are your thoughts on the program? Since I already have a B.S. in Exercise Science, I was looking at doing the A-BSN, Second Degree option. I have already attended a Nursing Information Session with the school and it seems like a great opportunity. Just looking to get more insight about the program from people who have gone through it.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hey Ophelia,

I appreciate you are looking for information about tuition and how to pay for your schooling, but this is meant to be a blog of my experience at Rasmussen. If you have specific questions regarding finances, please try to use direct messaging. Thank you!

Oops, sorry. I thought any question related to Rasmussen you can you ask here. Thanks for your response.

Oh, don’t get me wrong. I am more than happy to answer any questions about Rasmussen. And I would hope others who attend the school would help answer questions, as well. Your questions seemed to start veering towards the topic of general financial aid, though. Technically, you are free to discuss whatever you like. I am just aiming to keep this about Rasmussen Ft Myers as much as possible since there isn’t much out there about the school/campus.

Oh, I totally understand. There is not much out there about fort Myers Rasmussen and what you are sharing here is extremely helpful and what you have answered my questions is appreciated.

Wow, I was too naive to think I can borrow all the money from fasfa. Did you take loans ? How did you pay for your school tuition fee? Do you need to pay interest of the loan when you are at school? Thanks.

I haven't started school yet but did work out an entire plan with a financial aid coordinator. It depends on the company, some of them you pay-off from the first month after you borrow, some wait until graduation, etc.

Wow, thank you. You mean the financial aid coordinator at school? Or where I can find those good loans programs?
Thanks.

Hello hello!

It has been a while since I have updated everyone on how my nursing school journey at Rasmussen is going!

So, I am now in my 5th week of my 4th quarter at Rasmussen College in Fort Myers, Florida. This quarter I am taking Mental and Behavioral Health, Adult Health: Chronic and Transitional Care (aka MedSurg 2), and Quality and Safety in Nursing Practice.

Last week I took my first exams of the quarter. I scored an 88% on my first Chronic exam, and 84% on my first Mental Health exam. Not my strongest performances, but I will be honest... I was not motivated to study. We wrote so many papers last quarter, and we are continuing to write at least 3 per week this quarter. It is a bit frustrating and demoralizing when we have to continue to work on "fluff" papers. But!!! I have found my motivation again! I had great clinical experiences last week and we are really starting to cover the big topics in both Mental Health and Chronic.

Clinical for Mental Health is only 6 weeks long, and we have already completed 3 weeks. Tomorrow will be my 4th week. I love my Mental Health clinical instructor. She is intense, but you can tell she really cares about us becoming competent nurses. She is pushing me, and I love it!

Clinical for Chronic is roughly 7 weeks, and this Saturday will be the 4th week, as well. Our instructor is a NP who has a ton of experience and is really working with us on understanding the pathophysiology of various diseases and disorders, and how they manifest in lab values and physical signs/symptoms.

Overall, I feel the workload is not as heavy this quarter as it was last quarter. I am just sick of all of the "fluff" work. I wish we could really focus on the main concepts to prepare us for the NCLEX. But I understand that some of this information is meant to help us develop our critical thinking and get us thinking about safe nursing practice.

Alright, I will end this on a positive note... I am feeling more confident in the clinical setting and I am really happy/excited about it. I know I still have a lot to learn and improve upon, but things are starting to come together. I am really looking forward to the rest of the quarter.

I hope everyone is doing well! And until next time, happy nursing!

Hi CastiMcNasti - how long are your clinical days, or does it vary class to class? For instance, for your Mental Health class having only 5 weeks of clinical, I would hope for 12 hr shifts...but maybe not?

Hey adjappleton,

The length of the clinical day depends on the class/instructor. Each class is required to hit a certain number of clinical hours for the quarter. I believe the instructor has some leeway on how long our days are and the number of days we attend.

Our Mental Health clinical is 8 hours per day for 6 weeks. The reason for this is the nurses on the Behavioral Health Unit we are working only do 8 hour shifts, as opposed to 12 hour shifts like the other medical floors. So, we work the length of one shift. We also had a simulation day to prepare us for the unit, which counts towards clinical hours, I believe.

For Chronic, we do 12+ hour shifts. Sometimes we stay a little later if we are busy, but most of the time it’s just 12 hours. I do know that we need at least 90 total clinical hours for Chronic this quarter. Add that with the 56 or so from Mental Health and we get a fair amount of clinical hours this quarter.

Hey Jo2RN20! I sent you a PM. Thanks for reading my thread. ?

Hii,

I am also planning to attend in January 2020. I have my AA and those credits transfer in. I will also start taking the core nursing classes. I’m curious about the tuition calculator cost as well.

Hello Srp0288!

It is exciting to be starting your nursing journey, isn't it!? It is awesome you will be able to jump right into the core courses. Are you going for the ADN or BSN? And at Rasmussen in Fort Myers?

I will be honest, I do not remember what the tuition calculator estimated for my cost. I can tell you that the estimated cost of my tuition paid to the school at the time of my enrollment was roughly $36k for the entire program (6 quarters = 18 months). That included books, insurance, scrubs, technology fee, ATI costs, tuition for classes, etc. The drug screening, vaccinations, titers, and other equipment (stethoscope, pen light, bandage scissors, etc.) are not covered by tuition. You will have to remind me if the tuition calculator also estimated living expenses, because I know some schools build that into their tuition calculators.

Thank you for the information! I’m super excited about starting! I am going for my ADN. I saw that you were in the ABSN. Is the class schedule somewhat similar to the ADN and do you know if it’s also 18months? I had no idea that they didn’t provide the stethoscope. Good thing Christmas is around the corner! ? How do they chose which hospitals the students go to for clinicals? My fiancé is in the FSW program and doing his preceptorship now. He said he saw some students at the hospitals in Port Charlotte.

So, the clinicals are dependent on the degree program. I know that we do a couple of rotations in Port Charlotte or Punta Gorda for wound care. I do not know if the ADN program does that or not. We have rotations at NCH down in Naples, while the ADN is at Physicians Regional and other locations.

I believe the ADN program is shorter (12 - 15 months) and depends on how many credits you come in with.

Now, I heard that we (the school) recently signed a contract with Lee Health, so future cohorts may be doing clinical rotations in the Lee Health system. As far as I know, I won't get that opportunity because of how far I am into my program.

If possible, I would encourage you to try the ABSN program. It is a little longer (1 or 2 quarters), but will save you a ton of money and time on the back end if you are wanting to eventually pursue a BSN. That is the reason I decided on Rasmussen over FSW. Just something to think about. I also always encourage you do what is best for you. ?
