*Disclaimer: This is a vent...don't be vain*

Students: please don't post your homework questions without even doing some critical thinking on your own!!! It's ok to discuss your answer for understanding, but when you want handouts you are doing a disservice to you and all nurses! *If you do happen to pass the boards and become a nurse, how do you expect to "put it together" when John Doe starts tanking in front of you??? *How scary is it that many new nurses are coming up on the scene that just "sailed along"...

Also, for those that think nursing is the answer to a failing economy...stop. *No, you will not become rich doing this. *Yes, you will eventually get splashed with something disgusting. You will work holidays. You will be expected to work during disasters. (I worked during Katrina and Wilma and wasn't sure if I had a place to come back to!) *Don't expect to be a boss right after school. Expect to pay some floor dues. And please stop with the feelings of entitlement! *Nothing is beneath you...

I'm done for now...

Wow I don't hear that often LOL, Thank you :)

There will be no hiding in the break room to get your paperwork done, because "I finished with my patient"- there are 20 or so more out there that need things done!

Yea, I have heard some students do hide (so do some instructors). But FYI, my instructor for this semester would give us paperwork on the fly that had to be filled out in the middle of med passes/care. Seriously! I think she thought she was being inventive?! But it just really threw a wrench in our ability to work with the RNs. Some of the RNs saw this happening and understood that we had no control, others did not.

Also, the off the floor in a hurry thing, is often not the student's idea. It's the instructor wanting you all off, to shorten liability time (for them) but also, to force students to get things done in a timely manner. Remember, although some of us would just love to keep on with all you RNs, we are there to do only what our instructors want us to do. This is unfortunate as I don't learn from my college really, I learn when at clinical when I can get out of under the grip of my instructor and just "run wild" with my RN (just kidding) but more true than not. :smokin:

I am a student and so far have been having a great experience so I don't have a lot to vent about yet, one thing I have seen though-

To some of the nurses (at least half at the LTC facility we are doing clinicals at) please stop being so b***chy to the students and treating them like crap, especially when we are going out of our way to be polite and learn. It's obvious you have a great big chip on your shoulder and believe me we try our best to stay out of your way but when our CI forces us to go shadow you it wouldn't kill you to be Semi Polite and not treat us with such disgust. It would also be great if you let us learn other opportunities not ONLY CNA tasks, especially when later on you will proceed to complain about how we don't know how to do this or that and Nurses will need to know that but you kept us from doing those exact things. As for the rest of the nurses, the charge nurses and the NP thank you so much for your encouragement and guidance and patience.

All my other vents would be about fellow students lol

I understand your grief about not getting to do "nursing" tasks, but as a nursing instructor who has taught a few clinicals, the nurses at the facility generally know what the students can and cannot do without the instructor supervising. Yes, usually the instructor has to be the one to supervise to assure correct technique is being used, and because of liability. I was once a student myself, so I realize how frustrating it is. But as for the rude attitude, I can't excuse or explain that one! It's really uncalled for.

Actually, I get paid less than 2/3 the hourly rate I make working at the hospital, when I'm teaching.

Amen, that's why I keep my facility job as well, and won't take full time instructor at this time!

Thanks for saying this. I know that many of the schools out there told the now unemployed nurses that they would be in big demand and would write their own ticket for a job, and there would be numerous offers, blah blah blah. These same schools are still doing it, and will continue to do so, as long as someone is willing to spend the money to go there. It's frustrating for me because I teach as well as work bedside, and so many of the students thought, and still think, I was lying to them until now, they are still working at non-nursing job because they have exhausted all other available avenues to themselves. My current students seem to think that I've lost my mind because they keep reading articles on the internet that tell them how in demand they are. On the internet? It must be true. :jester: Now, that being said, it doesn't mean anyone here is unsympathetic to the unemployed, but if you go to the 1st year in nursing section, there is a stickie for hiring information-some places are hiring if you're willing/able to relocate.

My most recent vent, students that can't take responsibility on not passing a test and blaming the instructor for it when most everyone else passed. Shoot I did bad on that same test and know it was MY fault not the instructors, but to want to secretly start a petition because you feel you are not being spoon fed enough, my gosh they have already been trying to coddle our semester enough to try new things. Accept some personal responsibility on your education! I am so tired of hearing the trashing of this instructor when he isn't a bad instructor.

stop asking what degree (or nursing vs X career) you should go for.... do some research on it and figure it out! same goes for "where should I work?"

Yep been hearing that a lot lately because it's nearing the end of the semester and people are freaked out because they have a very small leeway to be able to pass so the bashing is really starting to go on. What was especially awkward is when our last test one girl asked how I did and I said bad, said it was my worse test grade so far in nursing school, she was like yeah and went into a total vent about the teacher and then talked about this petition, I was like ARE YOU KIDDING ME, then I went off about personal responsibility and how absurd it was that they were trying to petition to kick out the teacher. I guess she didn't expect that because she back tracked real quick and now that group of students you can tell do not like me much. LOL. Oh well life goes on! It wasn't the teachers fault I did bad, I didn't study over a subject I know I struggle with. It was my own fault, but I also wasn't freaked out about it either because I have enough cushion that I will be ok still.

This semester, I had one who decided that she didn't like the grade that she earned for midterm. She went to nursing admin at school and proceeded to complain. Unfortunately, all the instructors get the evals read over by the dept chair. She told this young lady she got exactly what she earned, and boy, this gal really was shocked to know that the chair knew what was up. I laughed at that one. Mi, it's very refreshing to see someone take responsibility for their grade. I know your instructors probably appreciate it.
