Random Thoughts about School Nursing not juicy enough for their own topic start here!
My mantra lately: "Wash your HANDS, go back to CLASS and cover your COUGH!"
THIS. Today I had a student with a pretty large splinter impended in his fingernail. He told me it happened on Friday (almost 5 days ago) and it was really starting to hurt. I asked him if he'd showed to his parents all weekend and he said no. Kid was almost 13.
I had a first grader come up today. He had diarrhea and accidently pooped in his pants, and his tummy felt "mad". After he changed I asked him if he had it at home too, and he said yes but didn't tell Mom "because she gets mad at me when I get sick". So, she sends him to school so he can have an accident in his pants. Nice. She was annoyed with me because she had to come pick him up, but then again she always gets mad at me when either kid gets sick. Like it's the kids fault...or mine.

Ok, here's one for today. Student comes up with a note from teacher "She has sand in her hair". Ok, I said to the student, you just need to stand next to a trash can and brush it out with your hands. Why did you have to come to the nurses clinic? Of course, she had no explanation. I told her to go back, go in the bathroom and brush your hair off. I asked the teacher later why this necessitated a nurse visit. The teacher said "well, I just wanted to cover myself" From what, a parent lawsuit because their child got sand in their hair? Ridiculous.
Then I thought about it some more...yup, there probably are people that would sue the school over something silly like this, because more likely than not the school will end up settling for a few thousand because they don't want the publicity. It's happened before!
Sad but true

mc3, I swear that is why I see MOST of my students. Teacher is afraid of parent retribution if they say "no." Even if it is nonsense!
Ok, it's the end of the year, I know I am crispy, but if one more student comes down saying "my tooth hurts" because it is LOOSE, I am going to snap like a twig. Wish the teacher would ask a few questions!
I'm getting really tired of the headaches/stomaches and asking "When did it start?" and the answer being "Just now." So, you had to come down the instant it started? What ever will they do in real life when they have to tough it out? Why don't teachers make them tough it out for a while, or wait until after lunch?
