hey guys i thought that the random fact throwing was an awesome idea so lets do random drug facts on this thread...it really helps to see and read all the facts!!!
sooooo...lets start...
1.) dilantin can cause gingival hyperplasia.
2.) regular insulin is the only one given iv.
3.) lithium side effects include a fine hand tremor, mild thirst, excessive urination, and nausea which are normal and does not mean they are toxic.

side effects
Fatigue,anxiety,depression,nervousness,nausea,vomiting,anorexia,dry mouth, and constipation.
I memorize it as....FAN(Fatigue,anxiety,nervousness), CAN(constipation,anoxeria,nausea) and DVD(dry mouth,vomiting and depression).

1. lasix causes ototoxicity
2. if you're allergic to neomycin, you can't get the rubella, IPV or varicella vaccines.
3. INH causes orange sweat, tears and saliva.
4. protect nitropress and amphotericin B from sunlight.

Beta-Blockers such as metoprolol, atenolol (most end with olol) etc may cause bronchoconstriction. Use these drugs with caution in patients with asthma and other respiratory conditions.
Laxatives: Aluminium=constipation! Magnesium=diarrhea!
Asthma: Give broncodilator before steriod (albuterol before beclomethasone etc).
Statins (Lipitor etc) can cause rhabdomylosis=muscle wasting!
Acetylcysteine is the antidote for acetaminophen toxicity (Tylenol).
Don't give "Spironolactone" to Pt's who have high potassium levels! (monitor urine output)

1. Pseudoephed is a treatment for priapism.

1. cipro can not be given with tpn, stop tpn 2h b4 admin.
2. 3 g's ginger, garlic, ginko similar to blood thinner.
3. st. john's wort decreases oral contraceptive effects.
4. kava cancels antipsychotic meds
5. depakote is the only anticonvulsant that affects the liver.
6. l-dopa, congentin decreases protien
7. emergency drugs to lean on (lidocaine, epi, atropine, narcan)
8. inh (increases b6), l-dopa (decreases b6)
9. maoi inhibitors- no popular med (nardil, parnate, maplan)
10. tocolytics- it's not my time (indomethicin, nifedipine , mg sulfate , terbutaline

With allopurinol you need to increase your fluid intake to 3000ml day
Estrogens increase your risk of blood clots

1. CLOZARIL is an antipsychotic like haldol...but clozaril isn't used much anymore because you have to get frequent BLOOD TESTS
2. ACE INHIBITORS end in -pril and their #1 Side Effect = DRY COUGH
3. BETA BLOCKERS end in -olol and you should watch for bradycardia! They can also be used for anxiety!
4. BENZODIAZEPINES (i.e. xanax, klonopin, valium, ativan) make you SLEEPY and their antidote is ROMAZICON
5. TYLENOL'S maximum daily dosage is 4,000 mg for adults (4g) and its antidote is MUCOMYST
6. ANTIDOTE for narcotics, like MORPHINE, is NARCAN
7. antidote for MAGNESIUM SULFATE (used to stop early contractions in pregnancy) is CALCIUM GLUCONATE
8. BETAMETHASONE is a drug used in premies born before 37 weeks to increase lung surfactant ~~so the babies can breathe!!
9. don't give ASA (aspirin) to children because it's associated with Reye's Syndome
10. Iron (Fe) should be taken with Vitamin C (ORANGE JUICE) to enhance absorption...it should also be given with a STRAW because it can stain teeth
