"The Code Blue Disturbed The Other Patients" - Shame on you bad nurses!

Nurses Relations

Is it just me or does it seem that a requirement to work in management is no common sense?

We had a Code Blue the other night - it was a very traumatic and rough code blue but thank god we brought the patient back and they were stabilized and then taken to ICU.

Next shift - as we are coming on duty (4 staff from the previous nightshift myself included) we are told to meet the Warden in her office.

"Other patients said you were to loud and distubing them". "One patient said she saw some staff joking and laughing"

and i quote: "Just cuse you saved a life does not mean you can carry on and be loud. Next time you have an emergency take care of it quietly"

HELLO!!! Get real.....EVERY code blue in my entire career is loud - its a life or death situation and there are 15 people trying to save a persons life.

Does anybosy see this as insane or is it just me?

The patients seem to think that we are having a party when in reality its a major emergency

me thinks every pt's room, needs to have ear plugs at the bedside.:coollook:

I would have loved to have earplugs to drown out the noise of parents who bring their children to the hospital to visit and then let those children run around yelling in the hall and bursting into patients' rooms. I am not making this up!

whispering "everybody clear!"

whispering back, "yes, everybody's here. why are you asking about attendance???".

nope, wouldn't advocate whispers during a code.

I have been in codes and the nurses and doctors have been vulgar, laughing and joking. I understand it can be tense and maybe this a coping mechanism, but I found it so repulsive. But the "noise" OH EM GEE! Get over it. Some of these patients seem to think they are at a 4 seasons hotel.

No, they are not at a 4 star hotel. That would probably cost less than the hospital, LOL!

whisper back, everybodys clear, shocking. oops i hope that didnt hurt. didt you say everybodys clear?

put the quick combo pads on each side of the managers head, charge to 360 joules and shock. maybe something will work afterward.

I personally loved the "Code Blue Charades" comment.

Doctor: (signaling)..."1st word"..."sounds like"...(pointing to arm)

Nurse: "Skin?"

Doctor: (shaking head 'no')

Nurse: "Epidermis?"

Doctor: (vigorously nodding 'yes')...signaling again to "cut word in half"

Nurse: "Epi????"

Doctor: (even more vigorously nodding) "yes, yes, yes"

Nurse: " He wants us to give Epi!!!!!"

everyone cheers...quietly.

I agree, your shouldn't feel bad at all the the noise during a code, there is a ton of people in one room. And I also agree that sometimes laughing helps (we all joke about horrible things to lighten the mood im sure) but the key is being aware of patients. You know how other patients get.. they're already watching you during and after the code.

I totally agree. Next time they should let the patient die, that way they won't have to worry about being tempted to laugh.

Most people develop the ability to understand sarcasm around the age of 12. I take it this is something you still struggle with?

I guess....also i am at home sleepless and totally delerious/exhausted/

So you could say "i love you" and in my reduced mental functioning right now, I'd think you are verbally assaulting me!

Sleep does wonders but my body says - YOUR NOT TIRED!!!

I am an ER RN, and about 2 weeks ago I had a lady and her 16 year old daughter (who was being seen for a cough. Thats it..a cough) throw open the door to a room where we were coding a 48 year old full arrest and loudly state "WELL SINCE WE CAN NOT GET ANY SERVICE HERE, WE WILL JUST GO TO ANOTHER HOSPITAL!!!! YOU ARE ALL IN HERE WITH THIS PATIENT AND WE HAVE BEEN HERE 45 MINUTES AND THE DOCTOR HAS NOT SEEN MY DAUGHTER".

....didnt go over well with any of the staff in the room.

YIKES...that's aweful, this generation of people makes me sick, all about them, ugh
