what's your "soft spot" patient?

In case you couldn't tell from the other thread, I have a real soft spot for teen moms. I have a dream of one day starting a home for unwed teen mothers and practicing as a CNM there doing prenatal care and education (NOT delivering the babies, though...). I'm a freak like that. :chuckle

So what patient gets that big ol' soft spot in your heart every time?

Just wondering...why not deliver the babies? One of our nurses delivered a baby today (albeit not on purpose!!! The pt. went from 6.5 cm dilated to delivered in 20 minutes!!!)

Anyone who is in SEVERE pain. I just feel like I need/want to take it ALL away. I took care of a pt today, who had been in a car accident, and had pain in her lower ext and back. (She was a wreck, no pun intended). Her HR and BP was elevated, and would scream in pain. I did everything I could. Finally controlled the pain with titrating meds, and a PCA. My heart went to her, as I know she was suffering.:crying2:

Having an "oops" delivery at work is something I don't mind. But I DON'T want to be the one who is responsible for delivering all the time. Sorry. Uh uh. Too much legal brouhaha to worry about as it is, and I don't want to be a slave to the pager. :D No way man.

For me, it's the frail elderly person. :)

Aww, that's sweet mjlrn. The frail elderly terrify me. Seriously. I'm so afraid I'll hurt them just by touching them with that paper-thin skin. Yikes.

For me it's in the eyes, anyone can touch me in that way that reaches in my heart. It's that look that reaches inside me and twists my heart and makes me feel like my it couldn't pump any harder or slower. I've even recently had that look even from a blind man, and babies, children, so i guess there is no specific person, in no specific situation.

It's all in the eyes, SR

People who are totally dependent on nursing for their every need. We have one lady who has been comatose for 13 yrs. A bee sting/anaphylaxis case. She appears comfortable most of the time, but can't imagine never being able to sleep more than 2 hours straight. We have to turn her and clean her. She has never had a decub in all those years. Her eyes open with her cares, but never focus. Sometimes I feel she knows it's me, I talk to her everytime i am in there. Tell her what i am doing etc. Sometimes she just seems to stare back at me..i swear she loves my red hair :)

Our newborns...

and moms, who like, me have had multiple losses, to FINALLY have a healthy baby. They get me teary EVERY time.

It's been a bad night, so my perspective is skewed, but:

1. Anyone who is actually sick/injured

2. Anyone who doesn't treat me like dirt.

3. Anyone who says, "Thank you."

:angryfire
