The other day I half-jokingly told my mother that I was going to enjoy a nice bowl of cereal for supper. I get the ol'.."oh, and you're going to be a nurse??" comment in return. I have heard this a few times from people during my journey through nursing school. This judgement if you were not being the ultimate picture of health. lol. I guess it is funny to me because at times I think of this too when I am in clinical teaching health promotion strategies, when in reality I probably don't do most of them myself. Anybody else get this?

About nine months after I became a nurse, I became very ill. It started as bronchitis and I ended up on the verge of ARF because of dehydration. I was sick, sick, sick.

Well, I was very weak and wanted my mom or dad to take me to the doctor since I was too weak to even drive across town. (It took me forty minutes to crawl across the floor and call her!) My mom refused and had my dad do it. This is what she said: "you're a nurse, you should know what to do...why do you need to go to the doctor?" Ummm, because I need antibiotics? (And I probably should have been admitted for fluids but I convinced my doc to not do that). I realized later that she wasn't mad at me for going to the doctor, she was mad because I let myself get sick.

Riiiight...

Oh my gosh, I have to add, right now I'm sitting here and my mom is watching Trauma: Life in the ER (I live with my parents now). A physician was shown on his way in to work, and he stopped at the donut shop to buy donuts for the ER staff. My mom just shook her head and said, "I can't believe that doctor is going to eat donuts."

Case in point, and it happened about two minutes after I posted my last comment, haha.

I hate that people dont think were human.

Uh. Does cereal suddenly become unnutritious if it is consumed at the "wrong" time of the day?

Unless you're like my kids and love the stuff that's nothing but crunchy sugar ;)

haha...well, I am sure there is some nutritious nuggets hiding between those honey combs I had. Funny part, I am sure I went home and had a bowl just out of spite anyhow;)

Oh man, I think we may have the same mother somehow. lol. It reminds me that apparently I too must know everything about health because I am a nurse in training and every other day I get a phone call with a daily list of health complaints to which I should be able to diagnose or treat?! Oh and nothing beats the day she called and asked me to administer her IM injection b/c she didn't want to wait at the clinic like usual. "Well, you're a nurse..you can do it"...says the woman, who agitats easily, to the student who has done only one ever and isn't licenced. That was a big fat Nope!

What? nothing wrong with cereal. In my case, IF I eat a subway footlong OR (NOT BOTH, because that's just gluttony! and I'm not trying to kill myself with food). . . let's say -->> Japanese food (guilt free baby haha) for lunch, I would only eat a bowl of cereal for supper. No, I don't get hungry for most of the day anymore. Either a bowl of cereal with juice or a sandwich with juice for supper. Hits the spot everytime! :) Cereal (the easy enough dish? :D)

OR I could just go for barbecue ribs for lunch, that hits the spot too. Then, maybe just a sandwich for supper. Or a small sandwich/soup for lunch, then ribs for supper?? TOO MANY CHOICES.... yay! :)

There's no rule when to eat cereal. Most people just eat it for breakfast. I eat it whenever. I also like going to IHOP, because I can eat breakfast whenever I want... ahh, capitalism at it's best .....

Good God. I'm going to respond a lot better to a doctor or nurse who has food weaknesses like I do telling me I need to lose weight or watch what I eat than I would to some perfect, toned, never-touch-sugar exercise fanatic telling me the same thing. The urge to just reach out and smack Doctor or Nurse UltraHealthy would be overwhelming.

Mmmmm, now I need a doughnut....I'm going to go get a couple in the morning. Yum!

You know what's funny, I am madly in love with Dr. Oz :redbeathe and I think he's brilliant. (We lost a great doctor when he left his practice at my hospital!) But you know what? He annoys the heck out of me because he looks perfect and never says, "yes, this food is my weakness." He makes it sound like it's so easy!

Yeah, um, I wasn't aware that a nursing degree automatically wiped out all the bad habits that you gain throughout your life. I sure hope they don't start revoking licenses for that, because I spend an awful lot of time going through drive-thrus. I'll be sure and tell my smoking co-workers that they aren't worthy of their degrees! :lol2:
