"Let me get out of your way"

I love some of the patients' guests. They are sitting by their loved one, and you make a move toward the patient, and they will say "let me get out of your way", then they move somewhere else in the room. The minute you move a little in their direction, once again the visitor says "oh, let me get out of your way". They will do this multiple times, and end up totally under foot the whole time! :chuckle

I started just reassuring them, "oh, just stay where you are, you're fine, don't move!". :lol2:

You are so right about how they end up under our feet instead of being out of the way!!! I even will joke with them when I tell them to stay, that if I need them to move, I will move them myself!!! That always seems to get them to chuckle. I will of course make it a point to tell them that if they do not want to see anything gross, then they have the chance right then to step out and I will let them back in after I am done.

This is hilarious. You do something on one side of the bed, they are tripping over you to move to the other side. Then you have to be on that side, so you're dancing again.

Although, better that than, "UM CAN I GET IN THERE?" to the family member sitting with the chair right up to the side of the bed that the table isn't on, just looking at you while you stand there with meds, etc...MOVE ALREADY!

It is really funny and cute. It's always really considerate people who do this. It just ends up being so predictable. :D

Well, thats better than those family members who refuse to move. Like the ones who are reclined in a recliner at bedside and wont get out of the way for you to hang an IV bag when the IV pump is beeping. That gets on my nerves more. I appreciate those who at least try to get out of my way. Some will even offer to help me.

Even nicer is when they're willing to turn off/mute the TV when you want to give discharge instructions or other news! I'm sorry, dude, but your buddy can't leave until I know that he understands how to keep himself healthy at home. The People's Court will still be on when I'm done.

when i worked 7p-7a, this was a constant in my life. i'd come in near the end of visiting hours, and end up nearly tripping over visitors.

the most interesting time happened after i gave a patient an injection, then went over to place the needle in the sharps container. well, one of the patient's visitors was doing the "let me get out of your way" routine, yet it was almost like a weird dance...he was walking backwards toward the sharps container, and i was in front of him walking towards it as well, needle in hand. his eyes grew, and then i realized what he must have been thinking. i said "i'm not coming at you with a needle...you're where i need to be!" he laughed it off but remained wary of me for the rest of the patient's stay!

Heh heh, it's funny when you take a syringe into a room along with the IV med you plan to give. You have one of those 18 gauge needles that you use to draw up meds. You can see their eyes widening, thinking that you're going to give them an injection with that needle!

I'll reassure them, no that needle is just to draw up the medicine, not to worry...:chuckle
