"I'd take an ICU or ER RN over a resident any day"

said a cardiologist the other day regarding who he would rather have transport an AMI patient. He's one of the more "difficult" docs too. It was nice to hear. Just thought I would share.

Specializes in Critical Care, ED, Cath lab, CTPAC,Trauma.

I once worked with one of the most persnickety cardiologists. He was such a PITA but was a brilliant cardiologist....he too, knew the value of a good experienced nurse. A sign of a great doctor.

Specializes in Pediatric Cardiology.

A doctor where I work said, "I don't know how you guys [RNs] do it, I could never do it." It was definitely nice to hear. :)

I would too. I always laugh in an ironic way about the don't get sick in July facts.

Great to hear :) @ pinkfluffybunny -- So true!!

i worked for some years in a fabulous open heart icu with an internationally-famous chief of staff. on july 1 he would make rounds with the new house staff and tell them, "these are the best nurses you'll ever see. if one of them tells you to do something, you do it." he made it clear that if he ever heard of a resident abusing a nurse, that resident would feel the wrath of god. he did the same in the or, and there was never a thrown instrument in there. i can see him now, pouring his coffee between two cups to cool it as he spoke, lovely man.

his chief residents all grew up to run cardiac surgery programs around the country and i imagine they are the same; i never knew cardiac surgeons were jerks until i left that place.

That's exactly how you would describe this man. But your right, he knows the value of a good nurse!

Specializes in ER/ICU/STICU.

Which, unfortunately, is not that far away.

Specializes in ICU/PACU.

I met a cardiologist tell me in front of a group of residents that "nurses don't know how to take care of jp drains". It was lovely, made my day. I find most cardiovascular surgeons to be *******s, especially to nurses. Lucky you found a good one!
