"I didn't know you were gay"

twice this week, I've mentioned to acquaintences of mine that I plan to get into nursing, and the reponse has been a joking "Don't you have to be gay to do that?" sort of response.

Does that stereotype actually still exist? Sheesh. I'll have to let my girlfriend know the bad news. :chuckle

:) Some people are just insensitive. I had a male nurse when I my daughter was born and he was wonderful. My husband was in the birthing room also, but the nurse was so helpful and encouraging. I am sooooo thankful, I don't think I could've made it without him.

Thankful for male nurses.

I start the ADN program Aug 16. We have 4 males and 36 females. We have to buy two uniforms. Females must buy one dress, one pant suit. The dress is more expensive and you have to buy hose. The males do not. Females have to buy two nursing caps and one cap tote, males do not. Females are spending $100 more on their uniforms. I think that male nursing students should have to be gay and therefore be required to wear the same uniforms. Gay drag male nursing students rule.

You have a WICKED sense of humour! Thanks for the laugh! :rotfl: :rotfl:

Nurse of the male gender at work: "Hi i'm Russ, i'll be your nurse tonight"

Pt: "A male nurse?"

Nurse of the male gender at work: "No i don't work for the USPS"

Pt: "Well are you gay or something?"

Nurse of the male gender at work: "I must be 'or something'. If i were gay, my wife would be more than P.O.'d that i was lying to her"

Got me thinking... any comeback if a male nurse is single, no girlfriend, and straight?

About the USPS comeback, anyone try actually carry one or two fake letters and when pt asked, you deliver it to them (probably especially good on April 1st).

You know, the nurse that took care of my son in the ER was a man and he was wonderful!! It never even occured to me that he might be gay. Anyone know where that stinking myth came from anyways?

This reminded me of an incident with my mom. She was in the ER and the nurse who put the IV in her was male. Anyway, my mom somehow moved her hand or something and he struke a nerve and she screamed. He looked at me at went "I am sorry, she is cursing me in Chinese, right?" I translated it to my mom and with a still painful expression on her face, she went "Tell him I am blessing him!".

Anyway after everything is over and we got home, my mom insisted that I bring chocolate to everyone in the ER who helped her. She also insisted I find the nurse whom she blessed a double portion of the chocolate.

ps. Ever since then, in the emergency kit that I have, I always have chocolate because I don't want to make the extra trip back to the hospital.

I thought one of our schools around here had to be the last one to still be using nursing caps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and on the original topic, my husband works with a lot of guy nurses (flight nurses) so it's pretty normal to me, although I'd say there are only about 5 guys out of 80 in our program at school.

I see your point but I DO say it with humour! Aussie humour can be a bit different for our American cousins to understand (I have an american flatmate)so don't take it the wrong way. Most people I say it to have a small reality check and realise that it is a stupid question. Result? We get over it and have a beer together!

Pax :)

Sounds good to me!!! I appreciate your Aussie sense of humor--I'm married to a Brit and a lot of them I would expect to say something like your response as well. Keep up the good work! :)

Oh so happy,

oh so happy,

oh so happy and happy and gay...

my wife and kids are gonna be crushed.

My biker friends are gonna hate me when I pull up on my harley unshaven next weekend...

Not sure if my brother firefighters are gonna trust me in the shower anymore...

To think about all the hearts I've broken...

And I never knew...

Chao baby...:)

I usually just explain than any idiot can harm but it takes a truly courageous person to heal....besides there are 40 people in my class only seven of which are guys. "I'm sure you'll have much better luck getting to know 33 intelligent, motivated, caring, attractive, and often times lonley women at your job."

Ollie

I would enhance the above to be something like the following "Just think about it, why in the world would a gay male go into nursing? I mean nursing is one of the few professions that has intelligent, motivated, caring, compassionate, attractive females. I would understand a straight guy would go into nursing giving this fact. If a guy is gay, wouldn't he try to go into some other profession that are more male dominate like, I don't know, construction workers (if patient is in the construction business, change the profession to something else) or something?"

-Dan

Nope, mitchsmom, our GAY administration requires all females to wear caps. Should I shave my head, or is that going overboard?
