"Escorted" out of work

Published

I work as a consultant to nursing homes, and have been licensed,oh, for about 30 years. I am seeing a horrific trend in which DONs are physically escorted out of the building. A typical scenario is this-staffing is cut, the DON (understandably) gets a bit heated about serious cuts-and is escorted out of the building! Mind you-this seems to be the latest "strategy" for admins/CEOs. I am astounded that nursing has gotten to this point. Certainly I can understand anyone being "escorted" if they lose physical control, but that is not what I'm referring to... Does anyone have an idea what help the ANA (or any legitimate professional entity) could do to discourage this type of draconian management style?

I know of several nursing homes that continue to have "acting" DONs as no one in their right mind would risk their reputation at these"said" homes. Can you imagine the humiliation of it all-While this has never happened to me, it is giving me serious thought about changing my career out of the long term care setting.

Well, as I think these last two stories point out, it isn't just used as a security measure...It is used as a way to humiliate and take revenge against underlings.

Ask me, I speak from experience. I still would not change what I did to bring the wrath...I advocated for a handicapped child and his mother. "But you disagreed with Mr. Harrington" I was told. Yes, I did, because he put the child in DANGER. But, Hey, go ahead and escort me out like a mass murderer.

Messed up world we live in...

I used to own a small business and it got to the point that I would call the local state police and have an officer there anytime I fired someone. Several got violent so it became a necessity.

I have had this happen to me, the one time in my life that I was fired (from a resident-care manager position in LTC). I was actually RELIEVED to be out of that place, and I would have simply gone to my office and cleared out quietly on my own.......but no, they sent a security guard to watch me while I put my stuff in boxes, then escort me off the premises. It was humiliating, to say the least.

Glad to know this treatment wasn't unusual...........even though it's overkill in most cases, I would think.

Yes, I was glad to be leaving. Not even a tear in my eye. Which, of course, made the one guy mad!!! He started yelling to see if he could rattle may cage, but he couldn't. In that respect I had the last laugh.

By the way...My husband taught me that saying. Do you just love it? I keep it in the back of my mind always.

Remember that, everyone:

HE WHO LOSES HIS TEMPER FIRST LOSES!!!

In this day and age if you can do this you will almost always win and walk away with dignity and respect!!!

And besides it rattles their cages when you stand there calm as a cucumber. Really.

So if any of you are ever in a situation like these other nurses...

That's just so.....Mafia-like. Geez. :(

I know, right? Instead of the kiss of death it's the lunch of termination.

So this brings up a thought...Do these firings typically occur on Fridays because people are less likely to go postal?

One of the RN's on our unit was escorted out just a couple of weeks ago. The really crappy part about it was, they let her work her full shift and walked her out after. Huh?

OMG, that is aweful. Do you know why they escorted her out?

Question to anyone...What are some reasons a nurse would get into this kind of situation?

I'm a little skitttish after what I have been through already, so this could help me.

Thanks...
