"Escorted" out of work

Published

I work as a consultant to nursing homes, and have been licensed,oh, for about 30 years. I am seeing a horrific trend in which DONs are physically escorted out of the building. A typical scenario is this-staffing is cut, the DON (understandably) gets a bit heated about serious cuts-and is escorted out of the building! Mind you-this seems to be the latest "strategy" for admins/CEOs. I am astounded that nursing has gotten to this point. Certainly I can understand anyone being "escorted" if they lose physical control, but that is not what I'm referring to... Does anyone have an idea what help the ANA (or any legitimate professional entity) could do to discourage this type of draconian management style?

I know of several nursing homes that continue to have "acting" DONs as no one in their right mind would risk their reputation at these"said" homes. Can you imagine the humiliation of it all-While this has never happened to me, it is giving me serious thought about changing my career out of the long term care setting.

Hi,

About 4 weeks ago my job was phased out and I had 1 hour to clear my desk and leave. But .. the really scary thing is that a couple of staff from that facility have rung me at home since I left and management has heard about it .. and ... they have told them that if they continue to be in touch with me they may lose their jobs due to the fact that they may breach company confidentiality during any conversations with me! Our conversations are essentially about gardening and we have never mentioned anything to do with my ex-employers or anyone working there.

Joanne that really smells fishy to me.

Your previous employer is telling people that they cannot be in touch nor friends with you?

What about if you wanted to meet socially

So sorry this has happened.

By the way are they your dogs in your avatar because they are soooo cute :)

Hi,

Yes, the staff that I have spoken to are very angry and are almost ready to resign, but I have told them it will all blow over and to wait and not lose their jobs.

Yes they are my dogs, one is a Golden English Cocker Spaniel called "Scout" and the other a Maltese/Poodle Cross called "Priscilla".

When I was "fired" (asked to resign), I was escorted out of the building...not just by the HR director like normal people...no, I was escorted out by the HR director and three maintenance men. It was very embarassing and I am not at all the type to kick up a fuss...I actually asked them if we could just go out the service entrance so I didn't have to go through the entire hospital to get me out of there. The HR director walked me clear out to my car (with the maintenance guys watching from the door) and gave me a hug and told me that I got a very raw deal...and that if I needed a personal reference, she had nothing byt nice things to say about me and that I had handled the whole firing thing with a lot of grace and dignity.

I know that a lot of businesses will escort you out shortly after giving notice...especially if you are going to work for a competitor. Just goes to show that if you plan to quit, but also plan to take things like forms or copies of whatever, do it long before you give your notice...and take a box to gather your personal things.

I agree that you need to keep a data base of all work that you have done. I used to email copies to my home address on a daily basis, mostly so I could continue to work at home, but also so I could keep a copy at home.

I also agree that you need to have something to put your personal things in. I had a couple of bags in my car that I could put things in. I was amazed at the amount of things that I had accumulated in my office that I needed to take home. :nuke:

Yes I have seen this. It became so common-place at one job, that anytime the security head honcho was seen on the premises, people would tremble and practically hide.

I quit my first LTC job because in the 8 months I was there they walked out 3 DON's and 2 administrators. For what, I have no idea, but I got the heck out of dodge. If the facility is that unstable, then I don't want any part of it. After working there, when I interviewed for my next job, I did more the interviewing that the DON. I asked how long she had been there, how long the administrator had been there, how long the company that owns them has owned them and so on. What the rational for the escorting people is, I don't know, but how freaky is that? LTC has way to many other issues to address and coorporate is more concerned about this. Unless is stealing, rude, unprofessional, lazy, etc. then I don't understand. The DON's and Administrators at the old facility didn't do anything wrong that I ever heard of and of course everything is hush, hush. Scary.

I understand that this is practical to do when someone is in an administration setting because they may have access to more confidential files but to nurses? This just seems like overkill. I have heard of this happening to nurses and I believe it is just a tact to humiliate and take on some sort of revenge.

The last DON who was fired in my CAH was not escorted out and wiped his computer of hundreds of necessary documents.

We support electronic records. Even if things are really locked down there's a way for the determined to cause damage. Including nurses.
