Hey guys,
This is my first post but I read through these all the time. I graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 07 with a Psych degree and will be applying to some of the ABSN and BSN programs in NC (Duke, UNC's BSN, WSSU ABSN, NCCU etc). I'm finishing up my pre-req's right now and had a quick question. Back at UNC I had one really bad semester. Long story short- my parents filed for divorce, and on top of working and driving two hours, back and forth multiple times a week, to spend some time with my brothers (11 & 12 yr old) so they could get through it, I ended up missing a LOT of class and got a D in AP I and a D in Chem 2. My Cumulative GPA is around a 3.2-3.3 and My pre-req is a 4.0. I have since retaken AP and got an A; however, Chem 2 is not a pre-req. Should I go ahead and retake that Chem 2 class to show that I can handle it- or am I overkilling it? Any advice would be great, Thanks!

I wouldn't retake the Chem 2 class to show anything, I would retake it to improve my GPA and to contradict the low grade, as well as getting transferable credit. You never know when you might need the credit for that class.

This is a question I'd ask someone at the nursing school. You've already proven you can earn a bachelor's degree and handle bachelor degree work. At this point it is just a matter of having the pre-reqs and meeting requirements to be accepted into their program.

Not sure if this helps, but I think it depends on what's more important to the school(s) you are applying to. If they are looking at GPA alone, then you might want to repeat it. But if they are looking at actual grades for the required courses, then perhaps they would not care so much about the failing course. Also, is the school at all forgiving about courses you took 11-12 years ago (when generally speaking, sciences courses are no longer good from back then anyway)? Where I teach, we will sometimes overlook what happened in the past, realizing that many students are not focused and have no clue what thay want to do straight out of HS.
