Question for people from Toronto

Published

I'm supposed to go to Toronto in 2 1/2 weeks. I'm supposed to go with another couple that's around our age...31 y/o. We're healthy. Non-pregnant...our other g.f.'s not going b/c she is preggo.

I haven't been following SARS on the news for the passed week or two...but hear they had no more cases for a while now they have some more cases.

We've already paid for our vacation. We'd be out a couple hundred dollars if we cancelled our trip now.

Would you not go...if you were us? You live in Toronto so I thought you'd get more of a feeling. I've looked on the Internet there's A LOT of articles but none that fully explained who's getting infected...I'm going to keep searching for info. but thought a person living in Toronto would "know" a lot that's going on there.

We don't plan on touring hospitals but have tickets for Lion King and will stay downtown in a hotel.

My father went to Toronto to do a little shopping today. If I'd known sooner I'd have asked the safety department if I could borrow a full face respirator and some N95 cartridges just to keep him safe :roll

What a picture nurseman (the mask not you!). I'm so ignorant I've never even seen one of those.

Specializes in ER, Hospice, CCU, PCU.

One of the cases is a physician in Baltimore. He had been in Toronto (? reason) and started feeling ill there (fever, dry cough, sob). Instead of having himself checked by another professional, he came home via air stopping at two additional places (I think) and than proceeded to go to work. He was sent home sick and than taken by ambo the next day to the hospital. He is in isolation with suspected SARS.

What an idiot:eek: He is a physician and of all people should have known better. He put all the people on those planes at risk because he was symptomatic and than proceeded to go to work in a hospital. They say he didn't have any patient contact on the day he came back.

Anybody who has any access to communication knows about SARS and what the symptoms are!! This doctor either had a large case of denial :chair: or he suffers from a God complex.

He ought to have his licence suspended for sheer stupidity.:imbar

It's easy to judge.

It's human nature to deny what scares us and also to not want to cause a fuss about what we hope is nothing.

There is some confusion about the symptoms. The doctor in charge of ER in Hong Kong says that headache, fever, myalgia and rigors are a lot more prominent initial symptoms than the much quoted cough and difficulty breathing.

Hey Nurseman, I was wondering what the full face mask and respirator looked like. They were threatening to use those last week if there were any more staff transmissions. What colour scrubs would look best with that -green or blue?:D

We had a Doctor who went to Toronto for Easter. She said the hole town is shut down. She has family there, the reason she went was to bring her parents masks.....i guess you cant find them anywhere there. Use you own disscretion. we actually had some of the office staff worried she was there and could of brought something back.

The focal point of the problem seems to be in the Scarborough area. Scarborough Grace Hospital is pretty much where it started. Most of the GTA area hospitals seem to have it under control (ER has re-opened).

Just have a great time!!
