Question about labs?

Published

This might seem like a silly question but, what exactly are the purpose of the labs on my science classes? For example in A&P I, I have two regular classes per week (about 1 hr. and 15 mins each) plus a 3 hour lab each week. What goes on in the lab? I just have no idea what to expect! Thanks in advance!

To Mariposabella and Aurora77, have you all done A&P2? There's plenty more histology quizzes coming your way, lol! Ahhhh...I hated it!

No, Im doing A&P II this upcoming fall semester. Its fine though I will be ready for it. I know I can get an A on it. I went to so many websites and found websites with histology quizzes.

I think it's like brushing one's teeth without toothpaste . it the essential part of A&P ,Micro and others .Just make sure you are part of those who do the disecting because it make you retain stuff better ,invest in a nose mask ,it wll do you a lot of good .

 No cadavers for me!

Only cats, pigs and other farm animals.

Oh well...

I did a 6 hour A&P combined course. This fall I'm taking physiology. I've been reading through the book and seeing lots on histology. Yikes!

I know some people don't mind histology but I'm not one of them. That was the most non-exciting part of A&P for me, lol. We had a histology quiz like every other week in lab. It was tough. Knowing how I feel about histology now, I'm afraid to take micro, lol. Good luck!!

@crunchymama

Thanks for your insight, that actually makes me feel alot better! I was picturing seeing the whole body, including the head and I would feel so weird seeing that. I'm an animal lover too, but I am going to do my absolute best to keep in mind that this is science. I'm a very spiritual person, so it's difficult for me, but at the same time I should be able to separate the "person" from the "body" and have a scientific approach.

That's exactly how I pictured the cadaver. But in my lab it wasn't like that and I'm assuming all schools are the same regarding this but not sure. It's a really once in a lifetime experience and if you have the cadaver opportunity I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Good luck!

Crunchymama & Hoping2B:

I just came upon this revelation myself; the idea of separating the body from the person.

There are these two shows I started to watch lately; Code Blue and 911: The Bronx (really good reality hospital shows), I like to watch them because they give me a pretty good idea of the hospital setting and everyone's rolls PLUS ideas on what to expect when you get there. Strongly recommend these shows.

Anyway...I was watching one of these shows last night and one particular case was of a 8 year old boy who fell off a speed boat and ended up with his arm mostly severed off. :crying2: Now this nearly broke my heart and brought tears to my eyes, especially since I have a 6 year old myself. But once I saw them operating on him, I understood. It's not about the boy - it's about the arm and trying to save it. Luckily, they were able to reattach the artery and bone, and the little boy was able to keep his arm.

I know this sounds a bit graphic, but that is how I realized it. I think this is how we save ourselves. It isn't always about the young mother, the little boy, or the grandpa. It's the tumor, the arm, the cancer. :typing

I just watched the boat accident one this morning...how sad! I too teared up because we have a boat and a 5 year old! Scary how your life can change in an instant! Thanks for sharing your insight!

I'm not sure when it is on again. I have my DVR recording it too. The last recording was on July 17th - I wish I could send mine to you!!! Really great episodes. I remember thinking how your life could change so drastically AND how much your body can actually handle and it's ability to recuperate.

just wondering...is the same textbook used for a&p i&ii? and what is histology? :uhoh3: does it have to do with history?

thanks!!!

lol@studentnurse75

Histology is the study tissues/cells microscopically...basically you are looking through a microscope at slides of things like muscle tissue, bone, epithelial tissue, blood, veins, etc.

Thanks for the clarification!!! I could not figure out what history had to do with A&P except that maybe it was the history OF A&P!!! LOL!!! :chuckle

How funny.....me and my sister are always talking about how they should improve the DVR system by being able to send recorded shows to each other, lol. Sometimes one of us will see something and want to send it to each other, lol! Give it time, I'm sure they'll think of it, lol!
