Question from future student

Nursing Students General Students

i will not be starting school till the winter. i have completed all other classes. What can i study now that will help me when i start the nursing program???

I am a nursing student just "heading out," (I graduate May 4th if all goes well!) so hopefully this will help you some. Have you already taken A&P? If so, continue to review the information... quiz yourself every now and then! Go to the bookstore and get a pathology book and study up on different diseases if you wish. I would pretty much RELAX but don't let yourself get lazy! As long as you keep your mind active, you will be ready for school!

The number one biggest problem that I've run across in nursing school (for everyone in my class) has been pharmacology. So from personal experience I'd say to start there. If you have the time and inclination, that is. Getting a head start on classifications couldn't hurt anyway, and that way you'd be less stressed when the info comes your way in school. Good luck.

I agree with Siam....go through these threads and find the ones with pharmacology links to go to....Daytonite has posted some great sites that will at least give you an overview of sorts so it won't all sound Greek when you start.....also, fluids & electrolytes tend to be a bit of a problem...again, there are links on allnurses somewhere, and also our instructor suggested we get an adjunct text such as the Incredibly Easy book or Norma Matheny's book on this subject....

I would NOT do the above to the exclusion of enjoying this time...paint rooms that need painting, do any last-minute organizing that will make life simpler once you start class, see those movies, hang with your friends, read those trashy novels, lol....but maybe every other day take a peak at some of this material while you wait....another good suggestion is to take a med terminology class if you're not real familiar with that....or, again, I have seen some excellent links on this site that you might want to check...

I believe Daytonite mentioned the other day doing a Google-type search for what you want and add the word "tutorial"....

Hey, good luck in the fall!! There will be days that will drag and you will wonder what you are doing....then before you know it, you'll be wrapping up second semester and wondering where the time flew and wondering what you're going to do to fill up your summer off (if you get one)....enjoy the ride!!

Because you will probably be tested on math each semester you're in nursing school, I would recommend reviewing Math for Nurses books, and start doing some of the problems, memorize some of the conversions, etc.

I start nursing school May 14 and I proposed the same questions to a few of my future nursing instructors. Everyone said to not worry about opening the books until I begin. However, they did recommend perhaps getting a subscription a nursing journal and begin reading journals. They said that reading nursing journals help immensely in a nursing program.

I would also recommend medical terminology if you have time. It is an easy class but will help you in other classes

I bought A&P for dummies..just for fun and to get an idea of what to expect. But if you've already taken A&P then I would say just relax until then. Maybe read some of Echo Heron's books....I've read them all and they're great.

Check out one (or some) of the many *Nursing Made Incredibly Easy* books. They provide a fly-over view / general introduction to many nursing topics. The fluids and electrolytes book I think is very useful.

I am going to second the math for nursing as well. A lot of schools don't teach the dosage calculations, and a lot of times the tests require a certain grade to continue the program with only 1 retake. Good luck in the future!!

Second semester here...I recommend math and fluid and electrolytes...my class thought that they were going to die on that unit...you will use it constantly...pharm is good but I would start with reviewing A&P, the better you know that the better you will understand the drugs and diseases that you will encounter. good luck, P2
