Can anyone tell me if you are legally or ethically bound to stop at an accident scene if you put RN on your plates? I stop when I can but I don't stop if it is just me and my 5 year old in the car. I would like to personalize my plates as long as there isn't any legal implication tied into it. Any links would be much appreciated.
OH heck no would I even get a license plate with RN on it! NO NO NO! One thing is that some people seek out RN's to harm them for bad experiences they have had in the past (or recently), and some people don't care what type of nurse you are (or even know there are differences)! Also, that shows you are a professional and some may think you have money and watch you and where you live for theft. They might even think you carry narcotics with you and cause harm! No no no!Also, a little story. My hubby and I were at dinner...after weeks of not seeing eachother due to conflicting work schedules (he is paramedic). We had a baby sitter and just wanted a nice quiet dinner. We went to a nice place, dressed nicely and sat down and started talking...
Well next to us where an elderly couple with their grown kids. They heard we were speaking about medical things and listened in (no worries about privacy...we talk about events or procedures...not specific people or anything like that...more like "oh boy my last IV was hard").
Well I guess they guessed that we were a nurse and paramedic and they came over to our table and started asking a ton of questions! I guess recently their parents could't get health insurance and were in trouble and needed some advice. Okay, don't care at this point...not to mention I can't give any! Took FOREVER and a day to get them to leave..and sadly not before knowing both of their bowel schedules (and probelms), and asking for the best incontenence products!!!!!! UHGGGGG!
The management helped us try to rid them from our table nicely, and did give us our meal for free since it was ruined (we had told them we wanted a quiet table and why).
I NEVER again let folks know I am a nurse outside of work...all it does is get you a bunch of questions you have to say "I can't answer that, talk to your doctor" a million times!
Triage - you poor thing!! Don't you hate it when you're out and about and someone finds out you're a nurse - and then they feel like you have all the time in the world to listen to their problems?!! :sniff:
I've had people who I didn't know call me at home!! Because a friend of a friend's cousin's hairdresser (or whoever) tells them I'm a nurse. One time it was to ask me if I'd mind changing their surgical dressings, because they couldn't afford to pay a home health nurse to do it - other times it's to ask me about private 'women's' issues. My standard answer is "Sorry, you'll have to call your doctor." Good grief!
And when I worked at the hospital, every family member and visitor figured that I should have time to listen to THEIR stories and give advice - they got pretty much the same advice as above.
My licence plate holder is an ENA plate holder. The only people who notice it are our fine county and state police officers. They have helped me several time get around blocked roads so that I could get to work to take care of the wounded they would be sending.
I have never acctually seen an accident occur so have never felt the need to stop. EMS was always there. I am not trained in prehospital medicine and Other than a stethoscope have little equipment in my car.
and to save myself from further descriptions of people's bowel habits. (Only when I'm on the clock, people... )
I am very proud of my accomplishment, but it just isn't in my nature to personalize my license plates at all. I wouldn't want a stranger on the road knowing anything about me, whether I had an RN plate or a "I heart my Labrador Retriever" bumper sticker. Bad enough I have the two booster seats which targets me as the "mom mobile" when I park in the city for work.
For the record Officer O'Maycin doesn't ticket doctors and nurses (or other medical personel) either. He's never run into a case where a doc or nurse has been rude to him, but he has his share of "I pay your salary, so why the F*** did you pull me over?" That's when he meets his suggested ticket allotment (no quota...LOL) in one car stop...

I do have a personalized plate, there are hundreds available here in NC.
Mine is a Nurses Are First plate and if you know nursing, you can guess what kind of nursing I do.
As for being a target, street smarts have gotten me this far, I'm not terribly concerned about my license plate making me more of a target.
As for being required to stop for MVC's and emergencies, I may or may not, lots of factors help me make that choice and my license plate isn't one of them.
And I can't speak to getting away without a ticket when pulled over by a LEO, last time it happened I wasn't driving the car. (the officer came by my house later to apologize for pulling me over as she was wrong- but that's another story:roll )
Hubby drives that car most of the time anyway, his commute is longer and it gets better mileage than the truck. He doesn't mind the plate either.

hehe, same here. I am proud to be an RN, but I don't want everyone I see to know it when I'm not on the job. In fact, I'd rather not have anything that causes me or my car to stand out or be distinctive. I used to have stickers and stuff on my car when I was younger, but now I have a plain car with no identifying extras. It's just a safety thing for me, we never know who we might run across with bad intentions.
On the same token, I don't use hubby's police union tags or have any police stickers on our cars. If I'm doing something to get pulled over, I have my family card, and I would be mortified anyway to embarass my husband to his peers. So I'd rather not advertise on my car we're a police family, either. Same reasons my husband does not wear his wedding ring to work, there have been gang members who have hunted down cop's families in the area, so we would like to keep our house from being shot at or bombed.
He also says he will always give nurses and docs some professional courtesty, and will not cite them...if they are courteous, of course, when he does pull them over initially. He can always catch up on tickets elsewhere if he needs to, there's always someone speeding around with a dozen violations or warrants around here!
Wow I can't believe the overwhelming paranoia I'm reading. I really had no idea people felt this way. Perhaps I'm sheltered living in NJ.
We're getting RN plates soon and I'll be one of the first in line to get them. I worked darned hard for my license and I want to proudly display it. In the meantime I'm getting BBY RN (baby RN) until the RN ones come. There's a girl at the hospital I'll be working at who's plate is PEDS RN. I don't think vanity plates make anyone any more of a target than anyone else. I hang my stethescope from my rear view mirror at the end of the day and my big worry is that someone will steal it and I'll be out $100. But I've got my favorite sports teams in decals on my back windows (non-permanant, but clings) and a decal for the town I live in which is real big on it's sports programs. People keep stealing my support ribbons of my car, but I've only had to replace them twice and it could be very well that they fell off, but unlikely.
Here, we're not obligated to stop if we have healthcare plates. Besisdes, what are they going to tell the cop at the scene? "OMG there goes a car with RN plates and she didn't stop! Run her down and give her a ticket!" Yeah, like that might happen. That's why I can't understand why people generally slow down when cops have a car pulled over. Trust me, he's not going to get in his cruiser and stop giving a ticket to come and chase you down.
I guess to each his/her own.
When I see someone with a "YourNameHereRN" on the tag, I think...."Oh, big woo".........But then again, I think Vanity plates are kinda silly.
I think the same thing...like, do you want a medal for wasting extra money? What if every RN in the country broadcasted it on their license plate?
Wow.. I have had my vanity plates for years. I never considered my having the plates as making me better than anyone. I just loved reading the ones on the cars that passed me all the time. Some people are so witty and come up with some cute wording on their plates. I tried being witty at the License office, but everything I tried for was already taken. Surprisingly my name was available, so I have my first name and first letter of my last name on my plates. This wasn't what I really wanted, but all the witty things I thought I came up with were taken. I also have what is called a specialty plate. Mine have little handprints on them and the charity these plates support helps stop child abuse. I have to admit from reading all the posts in this thread I am wondering if it is smart to have personalized plates. Never even thought of any of the safety issues that could go along with having my personal information so publicly available.
An earlier posts brought up the issue of people slowing down when a cop has someone pulled over. I admit this used to seem silly to me, since the car was already pulled over. Missouri now has a law and you will see signs on the highway warning people to slow down or pull over for emergency vehicles. This all came about ,because there have been several law enforcement workers killed while outside of their car.
