I've heard this twice this week and being a psych nurse, it's very annoying.
Do you nurses in traditional fields feel this way about psych nurses too? Please be candid, I would just really like to know. Thanks!
we could go around institutionalizing people for praying to god (hey who are you mumbling to?) running for political office when they have no chance, etc.
i'm thinking if we started locking up everyone who wanted to run for political office, period, we'd have this country cleaned up in no time .
"validation theory" has been a part of elder care for some time and in my experience leads to a happier patient when appropriately applied.

Please don't worry about what "traditional" nurses think. They are not as well informed as you are. Some of them give in-services on Pychiatric issues but don't even undertand a psychiatric patient and can be abusive. I work with 8 nurse instructors. Several of them don't do what they preach.
Please be a good Pychiatric nurse. Not like the one that visited me from the so called visiting nurses of NY, when I had an episode of anxiety and depression. She presented herselp as a Psychiatric nurse ( big deal, I am not even impressed with any medical title now adays - I am impressed with the real professional and ethical person), had an aura of Diva, asked me about my clinical story (which I am very nervous to repeat; I rather forget) wrote non-stop (to comply and make her money), asked very seriously and careless if I had meds and left. Never gave me support or assure me1 that I was going to be OK wich is a very important thing a psych pt wants to hear, since oneself can even think right. Please be a real Psychiatric nurse. Not unreal nurse like the many I deal with in a daily basis which you called "traditional". Thanks.
Bertita, your story reminds me of when I went to see a social worker because of some problems my then 5yo son was having in school. I decided to disclose my psych history only to give her some perspective to help deal with the problem. well you'd think she won the jackpot, she was so excited to have found a hook on which she could hang every issue. Needless to say I did not go back to her.
As a student I was very impressed with the skills of the psych nurses. They exhibited highly specialized qualities that are the essence of nursing. The most cohesive teamwork I have ever seen was the safe "takedown" by psych nurses. Not a word was spoken. They reacted instantly as a team by eye comunication only. Most impressive!
Oh, dear. I am in my second-to-last semester of my BSN program, doing my psych rotation, and I just discovered that I LOVE psych and that I really think I've finally found my niche. Does that mean I won't be taken seriously as a nurse? True, one reason I like it is because I have no manual dexterity (you should see me juggling IV apparatus on my med-surg clinicals!) --- and psych nursing lets me use my mental skills (which I have, thankfully) and not worry about my lack of manual skills as much. What should I do???

I HATE that anyone would feel this way! Having lived through Hurricane Katrina/Rita that mental health professionals were the most VALUED and hard to come by commodity in the aftermath. Having worked in Emergency Planning, I can tell you that you are VALUED and APPRECIATED by me. I think you are all real nurses and a heros.
Sorry for the rant but seriously- I mean seriously!

stay true to your heart, to yourself. go with the psyche. and don't give it a second thought to any ignoramus who tries to preach otherwise. just take pity on them.
much luck to you!

Psych nurses are very much real nurses. The measure of a nurse is not in how many technical skills they can do . The real profession of nursing lies in assessing, educating, planninhg care and analyzing outcomes.:thankya:
Great. I would like to add that listening and support are vital. When I say vital I mean life or death.
