  1. Dealing with a patient's suicide.

It's been a few weeks since this happened. I came in a patient's room in the morning to pass meds and found him cool and blue.. With a phone charger cord wrapped around his throat. The code team came ran the code blue but we never got a pulse back....
  2. Dealing with a patient's suicide.

Oh god that's worse than mine.. You actually saw it happen. That's completely terrifying; the thought of watching it and not being able to do anything. Thank you for sharing.. If you ever want to pm me too please feel free.
  3. Dealing with a patient's suicide.

I've seen an outside counselor before; I might go back for more help. It also helps that I am blessed with a fantastic support system at home and trusted friends at work.
  4. Dealing with a patient's suicide.

Jeez. You'd think that given the very nature of the EAP program would help prevent gossip like that. That is unsettling. Anyway, thank you for your kind words.
  5. The sloppy image of nurses today

I find the OP's description of the ICU staff more than a bit judge mental.
  6. Lol!! I'd hate to be the poor soul who responds to that ad!!!!
  7. Denying Death As A Society

Amen. I wish I could share this on Facebook. I've tried tentatively in the past to explain my views on assisted suicide but I can't find the right words and I always get shut down. Honestly my support for it is something I've learned to hide or el...
  8. have you ever caught norovirus from work or a patient?

Last winter the unit I work on had a major noroviris crisis. We have about 40 beds and it ran through the patients like wildfire. About 50% of the bedside care staff caught it. I remember how meticulous I was with hand washing and cleaning everyt...
  9. Death bed visions

Sorry to drop in so late in the thread. In reading the replies it seems like death-visions and out of body experiences are very, very common. Now, I haven't been a nurse for long, but I've seen and cared for a good number of dying patients, and I'...
  10. Can't Shake Off Rude Patient

If you have her again and she acts this way, try this: 1) get down on her level; sit on a chair or kneel on the floor, anything so that you're not towering over her making her feel uneasy 2) let your facial expression go soft and try to have a look o...
  11. How much trouble am I ? Scale: 1 to super fired

When she told you that you should "watch out" it sounds like a borderline threat!!! I would get as far from that place as possible and never look back!
  12. Am I the only one who feels very uncomfortable reading this article about the Texan nurse who caught Ebola on the job? Or is this ethically ok because of the availability of information these days? http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/ebola-virus-outbre...
  13. I'm glad I'm not the only one! Reading the article made me feel like I know more about this poor woman than I do about presidential candidates during election season. Too much information!
  14. Dizzy during circumcision

That exact same thing happened to me in nursing school. It was the most embarrassing thing that has happened to me because the doctor doing the circumcisions was my old pediatrician!! My episode was so bad they had to wheel me out... And they made ...
  15. Do you have (or are you) a bully queen of the ICU?

I love your writing style!! Lots of vivid descriptions. Truly I enjoyed reading your thread. I used to work with one of those types. In her case though she was actually a very depressed person. I don't work there anymore but I hope she's doing be...
  16. Of Nursing, Nudity and Public Perception

Seriously. If you don't like porn don't watch it. You don't have to write a whole novel about it. What consenting adults do outside of work is their business. Professionals who can keep work and play separate should not have a problem with this.
  17. What age did you complete your BSN or ASN?

I had just turned 20 when I got my ASN and started working
  18. Fainting Nurses

I suffered from fainting spells that turned out to be panic attacks during my first year as a nurse on the job... I'd have to say I'm pretty sure what you are experiencing is very much related to going without food for that long. I would make sure y...
  19. What does your username mean?

When I was in high school we were studying Tennessee Williams, who is a classic American playwright. We read The Glass Menagerie, and I came to identify with one of the characters, Laura Wingfield. Her nickname, given to her by her potential love i...
  20. Is nursing killing me :/?

Oh my gosh I had PVCs like crazy at my last job. I'm not even sure if they were PVCs really or what they were because they were never able to catch them in the act on EKG. My heart would just be pumping along and suddenly I'd feel a weird flutterin...
  21. Not sure if this question has been addressed yet but; can a nursing student change their username in here after passing NCLEX? Another option: just don't use a reference to nursing in your username. When I joined all the good ones I could think of ...
  22. Tribute to a Brave Man

You were my patient for only two days. My weekend; Saturday and Sunday. Cancer had not been kind to you, first taking your kidney then spreading to your brain, bone, lungs, and lymph nodes. You were quiet. Sometimes you knew where you were, somet...
  23. Nursing Hunger Games

LOVE this thread!! I imagine it being a nightshift full moon midnight strikes and the quiet breaks with a code blue alarm and all the staff rushes to the room and is running the code when the patient next door awakened but all the commotion runs nak...
  24. *walks out of the bathroom*..... I need to chart that.
  25. Chemical restraint and lazy nurses

I have a suprisingly similar story. I was taking care of a cancer patient and I don't remember the specifics about her case. But apparently at one point she must have been having trouble sleeping, and the evening nurse glanced at the MAR and notice...
