  1. Housing close to Los Angeles Childrens

Hi again, can anyone tell me if they have worked at LA Children's was the housing provided within walking distance or near public transportation? I am not taking a car with me and the recruiter knows this, but I am still a bit concerned about being a...
  2. Friending patient families on social media?

    One word: Don't
  3. Hi. I left unit to use the bathroom and the hallway reeked of pot. Two people were waiting to be buzzed out. I hadn't met them so I didn't know who they were visiting. So I went into the bathroom, but couldn't stay because the odor of pot was intens...
  4. Marijuana usage by parents in NICU

Hi Klone. To clarify it was a father and his male visitor. They smoked in the NICU bathroom, stunk up the entire hallway. I couldn't use the bathroom because of all the smoke. I would have had them detained by security for a little talk. Sometimes a ...
  5. Unruly CNAs

While I understand Ned's context on this subject, I have been where you are many, many times. I have heard CNAs telling patients they are the nurse. I've had them be rude and lazy. But now after a long time dealing with that, I work in the NICU and ...
  6. Bumped from NICU?

Hi, just reading your experience. Sounds like a hostile work environment. Im sorry, it's not always that way. I hope things are better now.
  7. California licensure by endorsement

I've done everything then I guess. I've been over the downloaded information quite a few times and did not see anything about proof of contact hours, so I guess I'll go by NedRN's reply and submit without any mention of CEU's. Thanks.
  8. California licensure by endorsement

Hi, My California license by endorsement packet is almost complete and ready for submission. For those travelers that have applied for licensure by endorsement in the state of California, did you need to provide proof of 30 contact continuing educati...
  9. Nursing in Los Angeles

Hi, I am seasoned travel NICU nurse and want to go to LA to help out a family member. I only have level III experience. In my last job, which was about a year with contract extensions, I was mainly kept with level II infants because the unit needed l...

Operation Smile has 6-12 month positions in a cleft lip clinic in Assam( India).Do you have peds experience. You must have PALS.
  12. Nurses Fight Back! Why Some Hospitals are Despicable

It's all been said before. But when you go to work and there are 22 "well" babies with 2 nurses, which is against national guidelines, and you somehow manage to get through the shift(12 hours of hell and tears)because the 2 nurses are literally super...

  14. How does your NICU unit run?

As for 3-4 babies on the same schedule you use common sense and stagger feeds. The next nurse most likely will not have my same assignment so we do the best we can keeping them on "schedule". It's not the ideal, but it does happen.
  15. They would love it it you completed a lactation consultant course.
  16. Not wanting to cross train

I'm NICU and years ago my facility went to LDRP and I HAD to be cross trained. Once I was cross trained I couldn't make it back to the NICU. After 8 years of it I left. I use the L&D experience on my resume and find managers want to talk me into ...
  17. 3 Months Orientation: I Want to Quit.

I'm sorry to hear it said that leaving a job after 3 months is not professional. I was at one place for 18 years. I quit after 5 days at a new job. I am seasoned enough to know I do not have to put up with impossible work loads and nurses talking beh...
  18. Hiring experienced nurses vs hiring new graduates

It was the 70's. I'm so glad the culture has changed😀 The BSN program was the 80's and a lot changed by then and I'm glad about that as well.
  19. Hiring experienced nurses vs hiring new graduates

Yes. I was thinking of diploma education as I did that then went on for BSN. The BSN studies for me probably taught me more about being professional. To this day I would never wear jeans to a conference. So what does that do for my ability to care fo...
  20. Favorite hospitals to travel to? (NICU)

Norfolk Va. Children's hospital of the Kings Daughter. Awesome NY Presbyterian, though you may float to well baby and PP. St. Agnes in Baltimore is wonderful. Will float to well baby and PEDS, but they will only give you infants. JHH, but don't eve...
  21. Hiring experienced nurses vs hiring new graduates

I have an out of the box suggestion for nursing education. Why not take a few units, which may be easy to find in hospitals that have closed units, and make them nursing education units. The patients, who would not be very high risk, would know they ...
  22. staffing question

I love you. I wonder how as nurses we claim to follow evidenced based practice, but I still deal with interrupted report time, alarm fatigue, constant distractions, you get my drift. I have been sent home early many a time. I have often wondered, wha...
  23. How does your NICU unit run?

I've done a lot of travel assignments in the NICU. At my current job it's a mishmash. Babies eat on a 9-12-3 or an 8-11-2. Sometimes you get three or four on the same schedule. The fluids are changed on evenings by 11pm and must be done on time as al...
  24. Bachelor thesis; Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome

Hi, I have been doing NICU for a long time. What interests me and very little research has been done is the combined care of NAS babies and their mothers. At a very vulnerable time we separate the couplet. It has all kinds of consequences that as nur...
  25. "Baby Friendly"

I'm so glad to see the board so active!!! I breastfed, I worked in a baby friendly hospital. I just want to share that I don't agree with the IV thing and I agree a bit of supplementation will not harm a baby or breast feeding. My problem is moms w...
