  2. VA Hiring Process

I applied for a VA nursing job online for the VA hospital in AR. I am moving back home to AR at the end of this month. About a week after I applied, I got a phone call from HR dept in Little Rock requesting a phone interview ( I live in VA. I did the...
  3. Fentanyl patches

We cover them with Oposite as well. Especially with patients who tend to sweat a lot, it keeps the patch in place.
  4. New nurse and Med Cart Interruptions

I used to keep a notebook on the cart for staff members to write (non emergency) things down. It cut down on the interuptions from other staff members.
  5. Speedy med pass

I currently work in a SNF with a patient census of 42 {there are 2 nurses}. I am taking up to 2.5-3 hours to complete the medpass. We have computerized EMAR. Shift starts at 7am, sometimes it is almost 8am before I can get report from the 11-7 nurse...
  6. I start my lpn class april 1

Ditto on the a&p and medical terminology. Also, expect to spend a great majority of your free time studying. If you are required to wear white uniforms for your clinical rotation, please please please wear all white undergarments. Make sure your ...
  7. I was recently terminated from my nursing job of 5 years. I made the mistake of making a comment about administration (not nursing, but front office). In the time I was there, I had never been written up, my employeer reviews were all good. There was...
  8. Mouth crud

You could always soak the swabs in mouthwash. I am forever wiping faces and mouths myself!! With the disabled pediatric patients I take care of, most of them are mouth breathers. That means constant gunk and crud to clean out!! Our cna's are fabulous...
  9. Mouth crud

I always use pink toothettes to soften up the gunk. I am a big believer in oral care!! Nothing chaps my behind more then seeing a patient with dried up secretions and crud in their mouth. Plus it makes them feel better too!
  10. Yep, totally out of hand. Funny thing is, when a significent event occurs, there may not be an event report filled out. I talked with our QA nurse, and she gave me good guidelines on what NOT to write a report on. For instance, one of our kiddos pull...
  11. We have to fill out event reports for lots of things. Gtubes get pulled out, or dislodged from deflated balloons. Scratches (even tiny ones). Heck, a new rec therapy person wrote an event report on me one day, because she thought I wasn't happy enoug...
  12. Is your workplace haunted?

At the old building (which was over 60 years old) there was the spirit of a nun who would go into the children's rooms and turn on the water faucets. Several of the old timers saw her, and one actually spoke with her. They said she looked like a real...
  13. Chafing

I would reccomend a thin layer of either baby powder with cornstarch to keep you dry or Gold bond powder. They both will keep you dry and prevent friction.
  14. Pediatric patients...parents are KILLING me!

You have summed up my thoughts exactly!! Some parents are just scared when it comes to taking care of a special needs child. I was scared to death at first, but with awesome nurses teaching me and helping me I got through it. There is nothing wrong w...
  15. Pediatric patients...parents are KILLING me!

My son was special needs. Severe brain damage, blind and deaf. Fed by g-tube and had a colostomy bag. I was blessed to have home care nurses help me with my son. They were there to take care of him during the day, so myself and husband could go to wo...
  16. Kindred Sub-acute Care Facility background check ques?

I worked for them too over 4 years ago and they didn't do a credit check. If they did, I def wouldn't have been hired!
  17. Any nurses with osteoarthritis?

I am a 42 year old who has osteoarthritis of the hip and SI joint. As a child I had Perthes disease and had several surgeries on my hip. As a result of the ravages of the disease, my femoral head is mushroom shaped and I have bone on bone rubbing. My...
  18. At my work, they recently took our holidays away. For years we would rotate holidays. Now we only get 2 off a year and it is their choice which ones. I didn't mind working them before, because if I worked Christmas this year, I would be off the next ...
  19. Vent about management......

Nurses at my facility were just informed that starting on May 1st, we will no longer have the benefit of being off on opposite holidays. The DON has put into effect that nurses only (not the CNAS) will only have 2 holidays off a year............ I ...
  20. Vent about management......

It is actually the CNA's who switch days/shifts all the time. Nurses in my facility usually don't not do this, but there a couple who are switching days with a nurse whose husband is terminally ill to try to help her out. This came out of left fie...
  21. Vent about management......

I really don't mind working holidays, I am used to it. But, it was nice to know that if I had worked Christmas this past year, that next year I would have that holiday off. From what I understand, management will decree which 2 holidays the nurses on...
  22. Vent about management......

None of us floor nurses actually get to take our 30 minute breaks (which are deducted from us) due to there is no one to cover our units while we have our lunch or dinner breaks. I usually gulp my food down on the unit, while being interupted by the ...
  23. Vent about management......

I guess it wouldn't be so bad if management would have to follow this mandate. They sit in their offices and make these decisions with no thought what so ever to their staff. They also have started to deny nurses switiching days with other nurses as ...
  24. You Know You're A Nurse If...

You know you're a nurse when in the middle of cleaning up a huge loose code brown, you say out loud " I have to get brownie mix when I get off work!" You know you're a nurse when you do the happy pee-pee dance when your patient finally voids You ...
  25. You Know You're A Nurse If...

I call my report sheet my "brain". I have been known to be seen running all over the building lookin for my "brain" which is where I put my patients vital signs on!!
