    New Nursing Student- Anxiety?

I feel the same way! I found out 2 weeks ago that I got accepted for an RN program that starts in August. At first, I was ecstatic but now I'm excited and super anxious. I feel like there is so much preparation of things to get in order before I actually start, and I have a lot longer than you do! Just get everything ready as soon as possible and then do lots of fun things until you start. Congrats!!
  2. I graduated in May 2008 (in California) with a B.S. degree in Biology. I moved to New Mexico after. I just decided that I want to follow my "dream" of becoming a nurse. I will start taking my pre-requisites in Spring 2009. In order to get into University of New Mexico and New Mexico State all that is needed is 3 classes: I will be taking A&P I and II and Microbiology before applying. I was told by someone at UNM that acceptance into the accelerated program 30% is based on science pre-req GPA, 30% is GPA of everything else, 10% for being a NM resident and 30% for the essay. I'm pretty sure I will be fine with everything as long and I do well in my pre-reqs. However, I heard of someone who didn't get accepted with a 3.4 pre-req GPA, 3.6 overall GPA and NM resident. I don't know how they did on their essay though. So I'm wondering...Is there anyone on here who got accepted into the accelerated BSN program either at UNM or NMSU? If so, what were your statistcs? I know that volunteering obviously increases your chances of getting in, but what else does? Thanks!

    Tattoos and Appearance

I will be taking the CNA course starting in January and I just realized that having tattoos/more than one ear piercing might be a problem. My mom is a nurse and when she worked at a hospital they only allowed her to have single-hole ear piercings. I have 5 in each ear. I also have a large tattoo on my upper arm and 3 small ones on my forearm. I figured I could just wear a long sleeve shirt under my scrub shirt. Would this work or would it be hard to perform tasks with a long sleeve shirt? I thought that nurses/aides today were not as traditional looking but I want to make sure. But I figure it also could depend on the area and the hospital. Any experience with this?

    California State CNA Exam

Hi, Where do I go to sign up to sit for the California State CNA exam? How do I find out information about the test such? I've googled and I can't seem to find anything...
  5. Hi there, I am currently enrolled in a CNA class in New Mexico. We are in clinicals and will be done with the class in 3 weeks. I am planning on moving back to California (where I'm from) after the class is over. What I am wondering is can I take the Cali state test with my New Mexico certification class? Where do I find info. about this? Thank you!

    CNA as a career?

Hi! I just started my NA class a week ago and I love it so far! I am interested in probably going on and becoming an RN. However, until then I do want to work as an NA because I am interested in being one and because I want some health care experience. My question is, is anyone on here working as an NA for a career? Not just a temporary job or as a nursing prereq but actually did the NA class to be a CNA? I know NA's don't get paid a whole lot but I just want to see if anyone has been able to "making it" financially as a CNA. Thanks!
  9. I am currently taking an NA class. For clinicals we need "white leather or vinyl shoes; they cannot be tennis shoes, clogs or open toed sandals". I asked my instructor if I could wear Dansko "clogs" even though they have a closed back but she said no. She mentioned that we should have shoes that are secured by lacing/velcro. Does anyone have any ideas for shoes fitting into the criteria? Thanks for your ideas!

That is crazy! I would be furious. I do think that he might be able to get away with working in the medical field of some sort. Maybe EMT??

    Pharmacology in Western Medicine

I am very interested in becoming a nurse. I am going to start by becoming a CNA first to get my feet wet in the medical field before I take the few pre-requisites I have. But the issue I'm having in my mind is the use of pharmaceuticals in western medicine. I know that drugs are important in order to treat many illnesses and without them the advances in medicine that have been made wouldn't be possible. However, I do believe that we are a society of over-medication. Almost every experience I've had as a patient has resulted in a prescription. I just think that a lot of people don't know that there might be other solutions to explore besides taking a pill. (Such as seeing if a nutrient deficiency is causing the problem) So I'm wondering...as a nurse, would I be able to make a "difference" in this problem? Or would I just kind of have to "deal" with this? I still very much want to be a nurse but I'm interested in preventative medicine and reducing the independence on drugs for everything too. Can anyone shine some light on this subject for me?

I forgot to mention my nostril stud. Would this be an issue? I totally forgot I even have one because its so not a big deal to me. I've had this for 8 years and it would be horrible to take it out.

    Phlebotomy Certificate?

I will be taking the CNA courses starting in less than a month. I hope to go on to an Accelerated 2nd Bachelors RN program later. I wanted to become a CNA first to see if I enjoy working in the medical field and if this is for me. If I do like the CNA classes I hope to get a job at least part-time as a CNA while I take A&P I, II. But I was also wondering if getting a phlebotomy certificate would also be useful? The community college here has a one semester program I could take after the NA classes. I have read about a few people on here who are in or about to graduate nursing school and have only drawn blood/started IV a few times. Would being a phlebotomist be helpful as far as nursing? Or would being a phlebotomist be helpful for getting into a BSN program? Thanks

    Phlebotomy Certificate?

Thanks for your reply. What is a Med-Surg? I keep hearing people say stuff about that on here...

    Being a CNA first

I'm doing the same thing as you! I will be taking the CNA class in Spring 09. (under a month from now!) I think I want to be a nurse but I want to make sure I enjoy working in the medical field before I go through school again. I also think working as a CNA first will be good work experience. Many programs do require you to be a CNA before entering the program anyway. Good luck!

Anyone Doing Accelerated BSN in New Mexico?

Thank you for the PM. I can't reply because I'm a new member. But I have been emailing with that lady already. I should go talk to her in person. Thanks so much!!

Anyone Doing Accelerated BSN in New Mexico?

Medic09, Thank you for your reply. You are right, I cannot stress over things I can't control. I have a major problem with this and I have given myself an ulcer recently because of this! I basically want to try and do everything in my power to improve my profile. And the thing is that I'm very anxious to start a career in medicine. My fear is that I will spend time working hard taking the pre-requisites and not get in right away. The interview and the essay are two things that worry me because I tend to over stress about things. If I don't get in right away its kind of like "what do I do now"?

Anyone Doing Accelerated BSN in New Mexico?

Thanks for replying. I just have another question...What types of volunteer work or paid work did you do to show your "commitment to nursing"? I'm planning on volunteering at UNMH and Presbyterian. But I don't know if this is enough. Did you have a CNA? If not, do you know of anyone else entering the program who did? I'm just curious if this would improve my profile...
  23. Hi, so my dilemma is whether or not I should take the classes to become a CNA this coming Spring 2009 semester or if I should start taking my pre-requisites this Spring? I really want to become a nurse but I know that I cannot get into a program overnight. The soonest I would be able to apply would be in September 2009 if I started my pre-requisites now. I only have 3 classes to take until I can apply (I already have a B.S. degree in biology). However, my problem is what if I don't get in the first try? I am really anxious to be started working in the health field in some form. The only way for me to do this would be to become a CNA. In this case, I could work (and not have to live soley on loans) while taking the pre-requisites. But the other side of this dilemma for me is that if I do the CNA classes first, it will take me that much longer until I can apply to nursing school. Any thoughts?

I have 2 questions: One, I was wondering what the wait list is like for the LPN program at CNM. How long do you have to wait before you can start the actual nursing classes? Two, where are you working as a CNA? I might take the CNA class next fall and I'm curious if there are jobs in Albuquerque. (Where did you look for CNA jobs here?) Thanks! :wink2:

I will be starting my pre-requisites in Spring 2009. I just have 3 classes to take and then I will apply to an accelerated BSN program. Until I apply, I want to volunteer. I plan on volunteering at 2 different hospitals, once a week each. But what I'm wondering about is shadowing as well. In order to do this, what needs to be done to set this up? Is there a program you take to do this or do you just ask someone? Any information on nurse shadowing would be helpful. Thanks in advance.
