Hello, I moved from San Antonio, TX to Round Rock, TX 5 years ago. In that time I have completed LVN school and am in a bridging program. I graduate with my RN in May 2010. I am wanting to move back to San Antonio to be closer to family and am lookin...

Hi everyone, I am a fresh VN graduate and have been looking for a job in a hospital on medsurg with no luck. Everyone wants RNs...and I really don't want to do a nursing home or home health. I applied to Austin State Hospital which is a state run fac...
  3. How Can You Tell if a Pt. Is Addicted???

I have been taking care of a pt. every weekend since she has been admitted. I would like to start off by saying I am a big pain advocate, however I believe that her pain needs to be reassessed. I do find pain management very therapeutic when used app...

  5. San Antonio Hospitals/Insurance/Internships

Thank you for all the feedback. I have tried to contact CSR twice regarding their Versant program. By the time I looked at the website, the deadline had already passed to apply (November). I would have thought they would start applications around thi...
  6. Rehab Staff Ratio

I can't believe it!! I don't know how y'all did it! Seriously I am over here griping over 11 patients but on dayshift with 2 techs for 25 beds per floor, but these patients are not "walkie talkies." I have to pass meds usually 3x a day, do wound care...
  7. The Lowdown on Austin Hospitals

Starting RN is 21-23/hr???? that's ridiculous!!! I'm and LVN now and make more than that on nightshift! I am in school currently getting my RN and that is nothing to look forward to. Ugh...

  9. What is your biggest nursing pet peeve?

    1. Dayshift nurses strolling in right around 7am or later then taking their lunchbox to the breakroom, heating up their breakfast and finding coffee before printing out their papers to get report ans saying take it slow b/c they are still "waking up....
  10. San Antonio ADN Q's

You picked a great area to live. I lived in San Antonio before moving up to the Austin area but once I graduate from bridging I plan on moving back ASAP!!!! I also want to live near Seaworld, outside of the 1604 loop and am interested in the new hosp...

  12. How Can You Tell if a Pt. Is Addicted???

Thanks everyone for their comments and opinions :) Very helpful for me to see the way other nurses deal w/ these situations. Ultimatly, I never brought it to the dr's attention, pain is something that is very complex and it helped to read all of your...
  13. Taking my 1st EC exam - Abnormal Psych!

Well, I had to postpone my test. I offered to work an extra 2 days so I worked 5 days straight and I just had no time to study or to rest so I rescheduled but the earliest I could get my test is Dec. 3rd! So I definitly will keep you posted!
  14. Well, I am taking my 1st test Nov. 4th *of all days*. I am excited and a little nervous. I am doing Excelsior through Chancellor's and I took the practice exam on the EC website and some stuff on there Chancellor's didn't cover or just barely mention...
  15. question!

Assessing a pt. may require some tools such as a penlight or stethascope. Basically what I do is start at the head and work my way down. I check for LOC by asking the pt. their name and birthday, what date is it etc. I'll check their pupils and the i...
  16. Taking my 1st EC exam - Abnormal Psych!

Thanks for the encouragement!!! The abnormal psych study guide came with tapes!!!! I dont even own a tape player anymore loL!!! I would have loved to listen to them just to add to my learning and try to retain more info but who uses tapes anymore any...
  17. Lvn?!?!?

I am not sure why there is such a standard. I know hospitals are trying to phase out the lvn/lpn and just hire RN's. As far as RN vs. BSN, I don't think either one is more qualified or makes a better nurse. Both take the same Nclex at graduation rega...
  18. Lvn?!?!?

In Texas I think for the most part the difference between an LVN and an RN is that LVN's can't make care plans, pronounce death, or push IV cardiac meds. Other than that......we assess, treat, give meds, clean wounds, start iv's, so on and so forth.....
  19. Just Get the Work Done!!!

where are you working that you have 30-40 pts?? are you in a ltc facility?? if that is the case then you should really consider going into another area of nursing, i dont think i would want to have 30-40 pt's on my hands and feel safe about it. fortu...

  21. # of patients

I don't think it is unheard of. Sometimes for nights we have 1 cna to 25 beds but we all work as a team. Also, the dayshift cna's will take the v/s for us before they leave which helps out alot. If you feel unsafe then by all means bring it up to you...
  22. Most memorable thing patient has said to me...

I work in a rehab hospital where the maximum length of stay is about 2 weeks. Alot of my pt's besides their knee or hip fx have other co-morbidities and some are actually very acute. Well, I was assigned to the pt. in 106 and his wife. I say that bec...
  23. Night Shift vs Day Shift

I love love LOVE nightshifts as a new grad!!! Like the post before me stated, you have alot of autonomy and you must be an independent thinker. My assessment skills really come into play and you don't have to rush through from one to the other. It re...
  24. I NEED something to wear.

One of the RTs at my work alwats looks nice in his scrubs but he is a bit flashy for me. I don't know many men that will wear pink or purple but he is one that can pull it off. What pulls him together is his shoes and labcoat. He ALWAYS matches his s...
  25. How to effectively resign? How to get a new job?

I would verbally tell them initially so when you give your 2 week notice (or longer) they are not surprised. If the aid is the problem, try to seek help higher up. If you don't want to go the route and really wish to go somewhere else, in your letter...
