Anyone a fulltime professor with a part time nursing job (staff RN or NP)? Just wondering if the workload is possible.
I have an interview for a fulltime ONLINE nursing professor job but am anticipating a 30K pay cut. With that, as well as my desire to maintain my bedside skills, I would like to work 2-12hr shifts a week. I feel like I can juggle that as the full time job is fully remote/flexible and I can work some weekends or nights.
My previous job as a professor, most other faculty worked weekends or picked up shifts for money. Any input is welcome. Thanks, dont want to set myself up for failure IF I am offered the position.

Do what you want to do
Um OK
Well if you want a more elaborate response see how much is required of the online job then determine how much extra to work...

I am associated with Profs (2 NP/2RN) who do this. They are satisfied and haven't voiced any significant difficulties to speak of.
For some, as you can imagine, it may be daunting, but for others, very doable.
You will have to weigh the pros/cons.
Good luck with your decisions, @PediatricRNTX?

As I recall, many of my instructors did this and I don’t remember any of them dragging their tails with exhaustion. Guess they were able to manage their responsibilities. I sure have my hands full when I try to have many jobs.

I have always had a “side gig” on the weekend (I teach on- ground Mon through Friday). Being in the clinical area keeps me engaged and definitely allows me to be more authentic with my students about what is currently happening in health care. I also like the extra $$

Are you going to be able to swing a $30k paycut?!?
I doubt any amt of a side job could help you equalize that big a cut.
Of course, unless you are OK with your needs/obligations/lifestyle.
Good luck.

Agree. I would like to keep my skills and the ability to pick up a shift and make $$$

Well that's where the side gig comes in. Working PRN on the side would make me about 25K, so yes. I would be fine. I am currently in a high paying hospital job but man the stress, the burnout....I'm tired of drinking the kool aid in a hospital leadership role. The hospital politics...joint commission, short staffing....blah. Thanks for the response.
OK, was just asking. But it now looks like you'll only be coming up equal $$, but at more work time to come up to that equal $ income. Like you'll be doing a job and a half just to reach your old $ level. I'd be concerned that you'll soon tire out physically and the PT job will take the hit.

Not a bad idea, this^^^
Even though you sound like you think you'll be OK, those extra PT jobs are the first to go. (Been there, done that) so you'd be back at the lower income.
I can fully appreciate the extra money. It helped me tremendously for about the 3 months or so that I did it. But enough became enough. And then I just maintained my FT mid-mgt position.
Good luck to you though.
