I'm registered for Fall of 2010. My Patho & Fundamentals clinical teacher are the same. I looked on ratemyprofessors (I know, not the most reliable source) and her reviews are horrendous. I understand that students that don't do well in the class could write the reviews and I know I shouldn't base my opinion on this type of review but I was just wondering if anyone ever had a teacher with bad reviews that actually ended up being good. I just want to know what I'm in for.

Thanks for your help.

I have used ratemyprofessor for a general idea when choosing instructors. I take everything from that site with a grain of salt. I no longer contribute ratings to it after one of my ratings was removed. When ratings are removed there is further skewing of an already skewed data base. You need to be able to read all thoughtful and genuine ratings for a nonbiased viewpoint. When the site itself, or the instructor, remove ratings because they don't like them, the site becomes useless.

I have my patho instructor for two classes this semester and one class next semester, and I can tell you that the reviews on that site were really quite accurate. She's just about impossible. I'm not asking for a class to be handed to me, but I can honestly say that I feel I've learned nothing.

However, my classmates and I are taking matters into our own hands and we're going to talk (again) with our professor face-to-face, and if things still aren't resolved (and/or her attitude gets even worse) then we're going to make an appointment with the Dean.

I can't imagine this going on for more years than it already has.

Anyways, I wish you the best with your instructor, and I hope that things can change for you... if your school doesn't have a mentor program, see if you can find someone who has already been through the class and talk to them about how they survived.

All the best!

In my experience, the reviews for upper level classes are usually pretty accurate. It seems to me that the teachers of the lower level classes tend to get ripped pretty hard by immature freshman students that just have an axe to grind because they got a low grade on this paper or whatever.

Of course, I still try to go in with an open mind but everyone learns differently and some students might LOVE a teacher where some will hate him/her. It is all about style! ;)

Good luck!!!

I have found that most of the reviews are spot on.

I had an instructor that had horrible reviews, guess what? I LOVED her! like someone mentioned above-its all about your learning style and some people give reviews because they've failed it or had a personal problem with the instructor. Good luck!

Yes, I've had professors with bad reviews that were excellent teachers. I don't look at what the score is, I look at what the critics say. Some things really bother some people that I prefer or at least that don't bother me, and there are a few things that other people really like that I avoid if I possible can.

I am jealous of those that get to pick your instructors. We only have one set of instructors for each class so if you dont like it tough.

How depressing! If your instructor is really bad, no way out, unless you want to take an online course with an unknown instructor from another school.

This is really good to hear!! Thanks for the post.

I was taking general core classes at a community college and I also looked up my teachers. I realize it's not the most reliable source either but I just wanted to get some kind of idea about them.

Anyway- I looked up my math professor (my worst subject by the way) and read terrible reviews about her. I mean,

A-W-F-U-L! I was so scared and worried that I would have an even harder time in the class.

First day, syllabus, etc. also...."if i see you on your cell phones you will be marked absent"

She was a very tough teacher and strict in her ways. Most everyone in my class hated her and always talked about her before she got to the classroom. I soon realized that the ones who complained about her, and asked her rediculous questions in class that were more or less rude, were the ones that didn't do homework and didn't make good grades.

I may sound like a teacher pet, which I am NOT, but I got along with her great. Her teaching style was exactly what I needed and strict schedule with homework was the key to helping me succeed.

So now that I'm done with that tangent, I just want to say....don't always believe what others say/write about professors. Use your own judgement.

And one last thing...Tougher professors in my opinion are the best ones.

Sorry for the semi-long post:) Just wanted to share my story.

I haven't been on RMP for a long time; because the last time I checked, the ratings on every professor I was looking at were SOO outdated. Anyway, last year before I registered for my classes for nursing, I had no idea who the profs. were for any slot. I just signed up for the option that best suited me. I didn't check 'til after a week. The ratings were both funny and scary on that one prof. I had for lecture/clinical. To make things short, yes, I still find her a little moody at times. This prof. for some reason, had a 'lawyer tone' like -- if she asked you a question, you better tell the truth (it's like you're under oath or something? Like her eyes demanded the truth? I guess blue eyes do that? they have an intimidating effect :uhoh3: :)) . . . But you know, I wouldn't mind having a cup of coffee with her, or maybe lunch. She's nothing like what most of the comments on RMP were saying. RMP isn't as useful as it once was. I wish RMP people did something useful on their website, I think MTV owns it now? I don't know.
