Has anyone else gotten leniency from the State Patrol or Police during a traffic stop? I have gotten many warnings instead of tickets when I am on my way to work or if I manage to mention my occupation. I got stopped last week, I was in uniform and when the officer found out I was a nurse he said that he'd just write down my info really quickly so I could get to work on time. He didn't even ask for my insurance card!
Observation from the posts above......
Don't ticket a Nurse, you may see that person again some day :)
Don't ticket the wife of another police officer....(my father was a police officer/My mother was stopped with a warning).
Don't ticket a fireman, EMT, you might one day need them
Any others you can think of?
I recently received my first speeding ticket. I had not had one in my entire life. I was going 89 in a 75 mph zone on the highway. Get this - in AZ it can be a criminal charge. Not all cops choose to use this particular citation, but mine did!
I have no idea about professional courtesy since I'm still a student. I'm just popping in to say careful with the speeding. Who knew it could be criminal?! Not me.
Well, getta load of this....
I just, for the first time ever, had a speeding ticket fixed. Yep! This cop who frequently stands outside of the grocery store where I shop in the eves hooked me up! As I was going in, I asked him if he has ever given a nurse a ticket. He then proceeded to ask me if I'd recently gotten a ticket - which I had. He told me to give the ticket to him so he could make a copy and "take care" of it. Well, sure enough, I went to the website where you go to pay your ticket on-line and lo and behold, the citation number was not found in the system!! Suweeeet!!
I once had a patient with a relative visiting who was a cop. This officer told me that "real cops don't give nurses tickets."
A little off topic here, but just yesterday, I had a patient who was a prisoner and the guard brought me back some Chick Fil-A for lunch. I think some of my co-workers were a little jealous.
Have been pulled over several times on way to work on 25mph road-at this point-the entire police force should know me! Never have received a ticket or a warning...sometimes I just get the wave through once they see my ID and stethoscope. I love my local police and always take care of them quickly and efficiently when they are in ER.
Maisy;)
PS I always leave an old stethoscope on mirror.
I had been in Charlotte about 6 months and hadn't changed my driver's license over from OH yet which is technically driving without a license in NC. I was on call and it was 3 am and i was dog tired when on my way home i came to a traffic stop where they were pulling people over checking for dui's, I got pulled over and the officer asked for my driver's license, figuring I was gonna have to face the music I started digging in my purse for my wallet but first I pulled out my hospital id and he said what's that, I handed it to him and he said where do you work and i told him, he handed it back and said have a good night Deb and be careful. Boy I missed that bullet.
I had a patients dad once who was a highway patrolman and he said if you get a ticket always go to court, you can claim not guilty and the officer won't show up and they will throw the case out.
A nursing supervisor who doesn't wear scrubs to work told me to always carry your nursing licence in a plastic case with your driver's licence and hand it to the police officer when you get stopped. Not sure if this is good advice if you are concerned about having your nursing licence on your person.
I have not been stopped yet this year but I get a speeding ticket at least once a year as I have somewhat of a lead foot but I am trying to correct that.
Let me add another story:
I heard about a nurse who one time got stopped/issued a ticket by a woman cop and the nurse ended up telling her something like, "I'd better not ever see you as a patient because I won't take care of you" or something to that effect. Anyway, I heard that the cop reported this nurse to the BON and that something pretty major happened to this nurse's license.
I think that's crazy if it's true because nurses are allowed to refuse assignments. I mean, it's not like the nurse threatened to harm the cop.

I am sorry but the nurse stepped out of bounds. She did threaten a police officer by telling her she would not care for her, if she saw her as a patient. Just as police officers are held to higher standards, so aren't we, as nurses. To be honest, I find all this bragging about not getting tickets for moving violations a bit upsetting. My uncle was a police detective. My godfather was a police officer. And I date a police officer. The one speeding ticket I got, I had to appear in court. My godfather was there. He wanted to know why I had not let him know about my ticket, so he could 'have taken care of it' for me. I didn't because I was speeding. Ten years later I got a ticket for going 57 mph in a 30 mph zone. I was one of 57 people who got caught and who had to appear in court. I was the only one who plead guilty, without an explanation. The judge wanted to know why I was speeding and I told him. I also told him I broke the law and deserved the ticket. I got no points, no fine, no court costs and four hours of traffic school.
If you are all speeding, what type of message does it send to your children when you use your profession to escape the ticket? Not one I wanted to teach my daughter. Not one I want to teach my three grandchildren. And forgive me if I sound self-rightous. I just think about what we all teach our children by such acts.

I have to say I agree with woody62, speeding is a bad example for our children. I really am trying to make a real effort to slow down. I got both of my tickets for going about 20 km/h over the speed limit and I did plead guilty and paid them both. On the other hand, we all get distracted and find ourselves going too fast without meaning to.

Years ago when I was still working overnights I was stopped for speeding. I was dead tired and in a hurry to be home, which is a terrible excuse. The state trooper let me off with a warning. Very nice.
