PRN pay in YOUR area?

Hello, Im a new nurse with about 6 months of experience and am working PRN now with wonderful pay, 32 an hour base. I should be relocating soon. Im not sure where I will be yet, but was wondering if those of you who work PRN can please share your base pay and location to give me an idea of what to expect to get paid in different parts of the USA. in alabama we make less, base rate of 19 an hour, plus shift diff of 3, prn float diff of 5 at our hospital. but cost of living is lower here i guess. so prn float employees who work at night make 27 an hour where i work.

I work in a community hospital in Maryland with 20 years of experience and my base pay is as a PRN nurse is $36.00/hour. I'm on-call 3 times in a 6 week schedule. I f I get called in, I'm paid time and a half for the first 4 hours and double time for the last 8. Nice paycheck with that one!

PRN is also called "per diem" or "casual". You work, basically, whenever you want and as much or as little as you want. Usually you get higher pay in lieu of benefits and security (prns are usually cancelled first during low census).

You only have half a year's experience as a nurse, and you're already working as a prn? Cool. I have read posts where people said one needs to have at least a year's worth of experience before they will hire you for a PRN job.

Most places will only hire you PRN after you have gained a year's experience. This isn't about being mean or making people "pay their dues". It is just an observation of the learning curve of the new graduate. It takes most at least a year to begin to feel comfortable working independently (which PRNs are generally expected to do). Obviously there are exceptions, but the standard practice is one year of experience.

Low here is about 25.00. High is about 36.00. There is a shift diff with this but it depends on facility how much. Most are .60 to 1.00 PM weekday. 1.00 to 1.25 week night. Weekend add 1.00 for day, 1.25 for PM, not sure about HS.

I am currently in Virginia. I work at an outpatient chemotherapy clinic two days a week prn. We are not open on weekends or holidays. I make $32.50/hr, which is good for a clinic and daytime hours.

My faciility offers no extra pay for PRN status. They contract PRN's for 2 shifts a month to be done on weekend. They give no extra pay, however i dont feel they are using PRN staff the way it actually should be used. They dont call PRN's to work extra shifts until they have contacted everyone else first, and i feel they should be the ones contacted first. But then im not management so what do i know.
