**I am in Michigan** In 2003 (when I was 13) I shoplifted at a department store with a friend. I took some clothing and was charged with a 3rd degree Retail Fraud Adjudication. In 2006 I was a high school co-op in OB at my local hospital and there I realized nursing is my passion and what I was put on this planet to do. Being young and naive, only caring about myself fitting in, I took a co-worker's jeans from the employee locker room. I was eventually busted and ultimately fired from a dream opportunity. I deeply regret both instances and have learned from my mistakes and every intention I have now is to better the lives of others and give back. Earlier this year I had both convictions expunged from my record- meaning they are hid from all public entities but viewable to state government, including the MI Board of Nursing. I have to report these convictions to the state when I file for licensure. I begin a RN program in January and I am so determined to become a nurse--I have jumped through so many hurdles and becoming licensed may be the biggest one. Does anyone have any advice or experience with the MI BON and a history of theft?

Yes, I am also from MI. I had an old defrauding an innkeeper charge for running out on a restaurant tab when I was 17 (smart I know). I had no problem getting my license and I was also worried. I contacted the board and they said it is a case by case decision and they will contact you if they have anymore requirements. I just listed it on my application and that was it. Now getting a job was a bit of a challenge but you should be fine because they are expunged. That's my next step. Good luck with your future program!!!!

I don't have experience with the MI BON but if you read around on the forum you will find others with similar history of theft on their records. I would encourage you to continue with school but know that there is a chance the BON could deny you after school in which case you would have to appeal, etc. I would try to beef up your records to show that you wouldn't repeat similar behavior if licensed as an RN (possibly volunteer work, work showing responsibility of others belongings, etc.). Also, if I were you I would contact an attorney before you submit your application and statement saying what you've done and how you are not the same person, etc. I have one now (during the appeal process) but wished I would've had one before submitting my app and statement so as to word things correctly and include just what the BON is looking for. Google license defense attorneys in MI and that may help.

I am in MI. I just received my license. I have turned my life around but past is... 8 convictions of retail fraud one of which was 2nd degree, one possession charge marijuana, one paraphernalia charge, two driving on suspended license. These were from over 7 years ago. In MI it is all based on time since conviction. 3rd degree retail fraud is a 3 year mandatory denial. 3 years since the date of conviction. So, you are totally fine. Good Luck,
Any questions just ask.
