So I am starting the fall of 2013 at Tunxis Community College in CT. I'm going to begin taking my Pre-requisite courses for the Naugatuck Valley CC R.N. ADN program. The pre-reqs are:
Now this will be my first year taking any college level courses, but this is what I will be taking this semester.
English Comp 1
Intermediate Algebra
Concepts of Chemistry/Lab
First Year Experience
Spanish 1
To start A&P 1 I have to take the intro Chem, and intro Bio class. How many semesters did it take to finish pre-reqs? Any thoughts on summer and winter intersessions? How many classes should be taken during those sessions?

Since my school required Chem before taking A&P 1, and A&P 2 before taking Micro, it will take me 4 semesters to complete them. I would have rather done them in 2, but oh well. I have used the time to take all of my core for the BSN program. I have been taking 13-16 credits per semester along with the sciences. Hope that helps!

I am not sure how your school does it, I can only tell you how Rutgers does it and perhaps that will lend some insight.
Assuming you did not get into the nursing program right out of highschool, you can apply to the Rutgers nursing program once you complete 25 credits (those 25 could be in anything but I believe the application is stronger if some of those 25 are the low level nursing classes). Assuming 12-13 credits a semester, that should take you one year.
What I would recommend is take as many of the low level nursing courses-that is you would take the same courses as those who got into the nursing program right out of highschool. That means the anatomy 1 and 2, the chemistry, stats, micro etc... You knock those classes out so when you "officially" get into the nursing program you are caught up or ahead of the game

Good day:
A lot of schools have it set up that you have to take courses in a certain order.
For me, it means an associate degree in nursing will run 3 years; but it could easily be four for others.
Thank you.

I've been going towards an ASN. My school requires AP 1, AP 2, micro, English 101, math 120, and a social science.
AP and Micro require chem before you can participate. Or two biology classes.
I'm taking chem in the accelerated summer semester(8 weeks). Ill be taking ap 1&2 in fall(both 8 week courses), and micro in the wintermester(5 weekends, 10 hour day). Then ill be retaking a couple classes in the spring to apply for fall.
I think your load might be a little much. Most nursing programs are very competitive, and you need almost all A's to get in.
Hope this helps!!!

Here is the funny thing, an ADN will take me the same amount of time as a BSN, as the BSN application only adds 4 courses, all of which I can take right along with my other classes. Here is the sequence at my school for the core:
S1:
English Comp
Speech
Nutrition
S2:
Intro to Chem
Anatomy
Psychology
S3
Physiology
Child Development
Cultural Anthro or Soc course
S4
Micro
A language or something from that same discipline (I took Spanish)
A fine art
Now, that's just how my ED plan originally looked, I've changed the sequence a bit and added some classes to get the BSN pre req's done at the same time. At my school it's IMPOSSIBLE to do the pre req's in a year. It takes two, period, because to get into any science you must have completed the math and English. Then you can't take the micro w/o the chem and the physiology. Bah!!!
It's kind of annoying that I will go to school a full year and a half longer than someone who goes to, say Chamberlin, and possibly, depending on where I am accepted (a community college or a university), come out with a LOWER level degree! I mean FFS!

The amount of hours you take per semester depends on how slow or fast you will complete your pre-reqs at my school. My first and second semester I took 16 hours, I'm taking a 7 hour summer course now, 13 hours this upcoming fall, probably around 12-14 credits next spring, then finish off pre-reqs that summer (if I don't finish next spring). I'll apply for nursing school next spring & hopefully be able to start in the Fall 2014.
Your load looks similar to my first semester load. I took:
ENGL 1101
CHEM 1151/Lab
Latin 1
College Algebra
PE
It's very doable & I did really well.
Thanks for all the tips n' info.I Really appreciate it. I heard about people finishing there pre-reqs in one year. But now that I'm hearing this two sounds perfect. Any why rush and risk effing up a gpa.

Mine will take 3 semesters. Dosage Calc this Summer. Speech Communication, Cellular Biology, Intro to Nutrition, College Orientation for the Fall. Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, and Pharmacology for the Spring. I already have English Comp I which is also one. 9 pre-reqs for the Paramedic to RN Bridge. I also have Microcomputer Apps and Medical Terminology to fill in the hours. Then I will start the nursing classes for a year and have my ADN.

It took me three semesters to finish prereqs but I could have done it in 2. Prereqs for me were Anatomy, Physiology, Micro, NUR 210 (an intro to nursing course, we could sit for CNA certification after this) and NUR 220 (assessment). I took Anatomy and Micro over the summer, and while I made a B+ in Anatomy I still pulled an A+ in Micro, so those classes are definitely harder but doable in a summer session. I only had 5 because I was second degree and all of the gen-ed fluff was behind me.

I applied to a BSN program. It took 4 semesters but I could of completed them in 3 semesters full time if I had doubled up on sciences. My school requires BIO100 before I can take any other sciences, so that caused a semesters delay as well.
I have taken classes in the summer & winter sessions. I save my electives for those times.

I only took 1 class (English 111) my first semester, I waited too late to sign up for anything and I wanted to ease back into school. I went full time my second semester, but didn't take any sciences. My 3rd semester i took both my A&P classes, math, and developmental psych. My 4th semester I took micro, finished up my remedial math (to get me to college level algebra, that I needed for my program) and took my CNA, so not full time this semester. My 5th semester I took my math, chem, sociology, and a humanities class. So it took me a total of 5 semesters, but only three of them were full-time. I could have finished all of mine in 4, 3 if I had really wanted to push it. The good news is that when I bridge from an RN to a BSN, I will only need a stats class and a couple liberal arts classes, everything else is done.
