Pre-requisites (A&P)

Published

I'm very concerned about a C that I received in my A&P course(this past spring semester). I was very very close to making a B,but I just didn't make the cut. Not to mention in my ignorance I drop the same class in the fall semester due to personal issues, and later found that it counted as a attempt, which at the community college I attend they only allow two attempts on your biology courses, otherwise you have to wait 5yrs for one to expire and retake it. So with that being said I'm very disappointed in myself, because I've worked so hard, and don't want this to eliminate me from being considered in the program. Is it possible to get in with a C?? any additional advice will be very helpful.

Thanks in advance,

Brittany

Thank you, I'm literally in tears because people are so judgmental, and don't even know my situation. I'm divorced with two children, I work and go to school full time. In addition to that, before spring semester I lost my father. I'm not looking for a pity party, I'm just needing insight on my situation, and what I can do from here.

What I would do:

1. Talk to a counselor to make sure your college accepts a C minimum.

2. Then work your butt off to score A's in A&P 2 and micro to remain competitive.

3. Don't worry about the hesi until you get to that point otherwise you will only overwhelm yourself.

Take it one step at a time. Trust me I did all my prerequisites while my gf was prego/had first child and mom undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. It's not easy but neither is life. Good luck to you [emoji123]

Here's the thing. When it comes to applying to nursing schools none of that matters. The grades you earn in your classes and the score you earn on the entrance exam are what they care about. Lots of people have a lot of things going on it their lives and they still get through their classes. All that's been said is that if you tried you're hardest and only pulled out a C nursing school isn't going to be a hard road for you. Like it or not that is the truth of the matter. "Passion" isn't enough to become a nurse, you have to have the ability to do well in the classes and learn the material. "Passion" isn't even required.

God bless you my friend. I'm not worried about the publicity of my post God has me covered, and he is the one that will make my blessing even more PUBLIC. Maybe posting a discussion on allnurses.com wasn't a good idea because it make me vulnerable to others opinions/ judgment, but what's even more mind blowing, is with minimal or little knowledge of my academic history other than the fact that I received a "C" in a single A&P course you challenged my intelligence publically, and publically try to humiliate me. All that isn't necessary. I know the God I serve, and he has the final and last say so. Jeremiah 29;11

You're making some big leaps there but if you want to read all that into what I said more power to ya.

say the same thing every time. If you don't meet the requirement for one school look elsewhere, you are NOT bound to one school meaning you can apply elsewhere in which you may possibly meet their requirements. Aside from that is a C good enough? Depends on many factors such as how that program accepts students (points or whatever) and the quality of students or amount youre going against. Without specifics nobody can really tell you, we can tell you that the majority of the time that unless you have a 3.9-4.0 everywhere to offset that C your chances may not be a strong as if you had a 3.7-3.8 overall. And it was mentioned earlier in this thread, getting into nursing school is not the priority for pre nursing students. Showing competency in the pre-reqs is because if you don't have a good grasp on the material prior you most likely won't have a great grasp on the material you'll be presented later as the nclex is the thing to be keeping in the back of your mind. Now it is a cliche to say that everyone does go through things when in all actuality it is true, that's just how life is sometimes. The key thing to remember is how will you adjust to that? Great nurses respond to adversity by adapting and that's something to keep in mind

Associate degree nursing programs often have lower standards or standards that consider MORE than just one grade in a course.

I would recommend when taking the test of your courses to score better, obviously, but you'll find what works best for you.

Best of luck in the future!

My program (ADN at a CC) uses a points system that takes into account all of your prerequisite grades and overall GPA, but the A&P grade is more heavily weighted. So, in this case you could get in with a C, as long as your other grades are high enough to make up the deficit. Since there are so many differences in programs, maybe you could talk with someone in your school's nursing program? Hopefully they could put your mind at ease. Good luck!

My BSN program uses your gpa from AP1 and 2, chem and micro and that is 12.5% of your ranking the other 12.5% is your kaplan exam and 75% is overall gpa. the average for science is 3.5 and a 3.7 for overall so ya its possible for some programs but you have to work hard and make sure you dont get anymore Cs. I am also in school with 3 kids under 6 that i home school. I have zero family or friends here since my husband is military and we have not lived here long so I know its hard but it can be done.

I am not sure what people are saying that is making you "literally in tears". Cs are NOT acceptable for nursing school. I don't know what else to tell you. No one is judging you they are informing you after you made the initial post. You must understand everyone has things going on in their life that makes school difficult. No different than being in medical school. You must earn certain grades to continue on. I am not sure what God has to do with any of this. There are christian nurses, atheist nurses, agnostic nurses, buddhist nurses...they all need to earn the required grades to become an RN. Good luck.

Since this post, I've actually have gotten all A's in the rest of my prerequisites. In addition to that, I've been accepted at UT Arlington. :) I did it :)
