Pre-requisites (A&P)

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I'm very concerned about a C that I received in my A&P course(this past spring semester). I was very very close to making a B,but I just didn't make the cut. Not to mention in my ignorance I drop the same class in the fall semester due to personal issues, and later found that it counted as a attempt, which at the community college I attend they only allow two attempts on your biology courses, otherwise you have to wait 5yrs for one to expire and retake it. So with that being said I'm very disappointed in myself, because I've worked so hard, and don't want this to eliminate me from being considered in the program. Is it possible to get in with a C?? any additional advice will be very helpful.

Thanks in advance,

Brittany

Where do you plan on taking it? What are your other prereq grades?

Difficult to have any input here without a complete picture.

Most nursing schools require a B or higher in AP. However check with the schools. It is important to know these things ahead of time so you know what you must do. Also Cs are not going to be enough in nursing school so you need to make changes. You may feel you "studied so hard" but it is not enough to be a nurse. If you literally studied as hard as possible then nursing may not be in your future. If you could have studied more then adapt and navigate the course to earn the required grade.

Do you have to take a teas? Or ACT? If you do and you do outstanding it could better your chances

It depends on your school. My school doesn't care about individual grades, but does rely heavily in our overall Math/Science GPA.

I would look at the requirements for your school, but I highly doubt a single c will prevent you from pursuing nursing.

I know some people who took the combined course of anatomy and physiology together for example biology 20a A&P and 20b A& P at my school. I had a friend who did bad in her 20a class so she took the courses separately. in the bay area they would be bio 2 for anatomy and bio 4 for physiology. See if your school have that option

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but you said your school allows two attempts.

Is this your second attempt?....EDIT: I just read you dropped and it counted.

How are your other grades? Do your potential schools consider things other than grades? Do you volunteer, work? My hopeful BSN program is strictly based off grades, but I know there are others I am applying to that will accept a resume with volunteer experience etc.

Also, I have no clue if you can get in with a C. I know for my program you need higher than a C, so no. But the ADN program at my CC's (which I will also apply to) accept at least a C.

If your other grades are strong, apply. Talk to advisors and ask how you can make your application stronger.

Apply, what do you have to lose? I highly recommend applying to more than one program as well. You are not the first and last to get a C. Good luck!

My first day of A and P my instructor said "they tell you a C is a min., but if you get a C here you have just wasted your time". That being said, I got an A in the class, but I know a girl who got 2 B's and a C in her Bio classes and she got in as well.

I have read many times on this forum that the prereqs are intended to weed out the non hackers. I think the question you should be asking yourself is "why did I get a C?" If you got a C because you didn't do your best, or some other reason I wouldn't sweat it as long as you intend on doing better once you are in. If you busted your but and a C is all you could produce than this might not be for you. I got all A's and one B+ on my prereqs, and that was about the best I could produce (B+ still bugs me). All I did was school. The girl I mentioned who got 2 B's and a C worked a full time job, which she is going to be quitting once she starts nursing school. Had she been only doing classes she probably would have done as well as me, if not better.

"Getting in", isn't the most important thing; becoming a nurse is. I would rather have failed all my prereqs and dropped out rather than going the distance, getting the degree and figuring out I don't have what it takes to pass the NCLEX. There is no prize for second place, coming close doesn't count.

Well that the first biology that I've taken out of the three, which are A&P 1+2, and microbiology. In addition to that we are required to take the hesi exam.

Thank you for your advice, but this is very negative and not encouraging at all. I'm more than qualified just as you were once upon a time. So with that being said God Bless You, and don't count me out just yet.

Well I have two children, divorced , and work full time. I do have the passion to start and finish, however I take it a millstone at a time. So right now my goal is my acceptance, then after finishing and becoming a NURSE.
