Pre-Requisite Nursing Course with LAB?

Nursing Students General Students

Hi ?

I have a BA in Fashion Design, but I want to do my Masters in Nursing, MSN. I have some experience working as a First Responder and in hospitals as Nursing Assistant. I want to know if anyone here can help me, please. I would like to ask:

  1. If you know where can I get my Pre-Requisite Course (with LAB) done, preferably online (not expensive) or at a Community College.
  2. If you know any good University that offers the MSN to someone with a non-nursing degree, please.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate your help.

All The Best to everyone,

Chris ?

Another way to be able to work in medical field as a mid level provider is getting into a Physician Assistant (PA) program. Because you have had some medical experience as a CNA, you can finish that program in 17 months; instead of spending at least 4 years going from ABSN to MSN.

I did my prereqs online at Clovis Community College in Clovis, NM (clovis.edu). You never have to go to New Mexico, and the labs are all done in your home (I dissected a fetal pig on my dining room table...) Some exams require a proctor, but your local community college or university probably offers proctor services. It's $111/credit, so about $350/class when you add in fees.

Like another poster said, different schools require different prereqs, but you can be pretty sure that you'll need A&P 1 and 2, microbiology, chemistry, and statistics. You should start with those until you figure out the exact classes you'll need for the schools you want to apply to.

Dear Sara-no-H,
Thank you so much for your reply. I really appreciate.
I looked at Clovis.edu and did not find the Pre Req course. Can you send me the link, please.
Yes, normally, they ask for Anatomy/Physiology I II, Microbiology, PathoPhysiology, Statistics, Lifespan, Nutrition. I'll try to find a community college that offer those courses and do them as soon as possible.

Many thanks again. ?

Not to hijack this post but I think you ask some very good questions for those of us moving into nursing as a second career. I have contemplated many programs to enter nursing but I know my career goal (at least now and I understand this may change) is RN case management as I have been a social worker for 10 years and feel this is a good fit. What I can't seem to decipher is if I need the MSN for this career, or if a BSN would work just as well. Any advice in this case? I have completed all prereqs, have applied and been accepted to a ADN/MSN concurrent enrollment and have also applied to a traditional BSN program (which is a better education and less costly... unless I do ultimately need an MSN in which case it would be more costly to do the BSN and then MSN route). Thanks!

Dear Araew2129,
Thank you so much for you message/input.
1) Where did you do your Pre Req courses? and
2) Which University offers the ADN/MSN that you've been accepted? How long is for? and its an online course? if i may ask you.
3) I think I'm going to do the Accelerate BSN...
However I plan to do my MSN and DNP or Phd afterwards.

Best wishes. ?

I am currently taking my last 2 pre-reqs online with Edukan and I love it. A lot of work but that’s expected given that I’m in the 8wks program. I too have a Bachelors in another discipline and my goal is to become and FNP.

I plan to go the accelerated route. Get a BSN in 14 months. Work 1 year in ICU (most NP program requirement) and then go back for my MSN-FNP.

I did all of my prerequisites at my local community college. Where are you located? That might help with suggestions on where to do the prerequisites if you did want to do them in person.

Grand Canyon University has a concurrent enrollment with my local community college for the ADN-MSN program. The ADN is all in-person at the community college and all of the MSN work is only online through Grand Canyon. It does require that you have a prior bachelor's degree in another area. I know of at least one other online program to obtain a MSN if you get a ADN degree and have a non-nursing bachelor's and that is through Northern Arizona University. I am sure there are many. But I've only looked at programs in my area which I am familiar with already.

I really would like to work in a hospital, and be able to help the patients and my coworkers/colleagues. ?

New Mexico Junior College offers A&P I and II and Micro online - very good classes and very cheap.

I worked a Physician Assistant before and going through this 'route' will take time.
There are some ABSN that are from 12 to 18 months, and some MSN that are one year.
I think I'm going to do my ABSN and then my MSN.
Many thanks again.

Please make sure whatever program you're trying to get into will take the transfer credits -- no class with lab is going to be 100% online.

Hi Msjj,
Thank you so much for your reply. I really appreciate.
Ive contacted Edukan and they said that I needed to 'belong' to one of their consortium of community colleges. How did you do in order to do your Pre Req at Edukan? please.

Many thanks again.
