Pre-Reading?

Do you guys pre-read for a class? Should I email my teacher about what I can do not to prepare me for my classes? Will this make me look like I am kissing but or that I want to do good? I have a HUGE course load.

Can't help you on that one...we have homework that is due on the first day of classes every semester. We HAVE to "preread".

Can't hurt to ask! My courses have started to post syllabi and schedules on the school website, so you might start there.

I tried there and they do not have this semester syllabi up yet... but thanks for the suggestion! :)

Every time I take the time to pre-read I get to class on the first day and we start at some totaly random place in the book...thats not what I have read lol. Although every semester I still find my self trying to cram in the first chapter or two you would think I would learn :selfbonk:

I agree with the poster above about random chapters. I wouldn't preread without having a syllabus. Don't feel bad about asking for one ahead of time. I emailed my teacher last week, I asked for either a syllabus or even the first few chapters to get a jump on the reading. And although she and referred to me as an "over achiever" (which I took just a little personal. ;-)) and said she would rather I enjoy the rest of the summer vacation and show up refreshed for first day, she did send a copy of last years for me to look at. ;-) I feel SO much better knowing a little about what is coming ahead.

It never hurts to ask. I figure I would rather look at the reading on my own free time while relaxing on the porch, or after a nice day at the beach than wait till semester starts and be stressed about all the other stuff that will be piled up on top of it all. ;-)

Good luck.

I do not pre-read. I have to read enough during the semester that when I have a break I use it fully!! I found that my instructor skip around so much and omit different topics in the chapters that to pre-read would just be extra work for me.

I agree with Vista.

If the school wanted us to pre-read or do homework they would give us notice about that.

With that said, I don't consider it pre-reading but I do glance at my text book, and make notes of the end of chapters for review, and I tag the appendix. Never know when they might come handy.

This is summer vacation, and you should try and relax. We are all going to go crazy once school starts...

My school has several assignments due and much reading expected by the end of the 1st week of the semester. Even if they did not I would have sought the information because I have one of those "eventful" lives. I need to be prepared well in advance in case a family member gets sick or there is some emergency (which happens EVERY semester).

Personally I would call the instructors but I don't care if they think I am kissing butt -- I am actually looking after myself.

Good luck!

Don't worry about it. You won't be behind the first day w/o doing some reading. Chances are most of your classmates haven't read. If you feel like you should be doing something, review some terminology or anp.

Yes! Pre-reading is the way I made A's. Even when its not required, I feel more at ease when I know what to expect. Plus, life has this funny way of throwing curve balls when you really need to study.

This will be my first semester with serious pre-reading out of the way. I'm almost halfway through the med-surg reading. We're in our first week of classes and I feel so much more at ease. I read mostly during my daughter's gymnastics and scout meetings. I won't find out how useful it was until I get my first test score back. I've already sworn that if it doesn't help, I will party over winter break!

Our school mailed us the reading schedule at the beginning of July, so they're clearly in favor of reading ahead.
