Spring 2011 Samuel Merritt ABSN- Nursing CAS

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Question:

Does anyone has a complete list of what does need to be sent to NursingCAS?

I understand the transcripts, letters of reference (electronic), as well as the app fee goes directly to them. Do we still need to complete the writing sample portion or just the personal statement that is available on the NursingCAS?

Do I also need to send my letter of good standing from my previous nursing school and my request of transfer statement to NursingCAS or to SM?

I sent an email out the a counselor, but I would just like to know because I am very confused... ;)

I also live in Sac, work FT & have a son, so there is no opportunity to go to a counseling appointment unless I take off work.

Thank you!!

Just an update:

I spoke with Janessa, really sweet, and she informed me that the only items we will have to send to NursingCAS are our transcripts. *Although technically, we will not be sending them, the registrar of the college will.

Everything else, including the writing samples (which are now broken down into multiple sections) as well as the references (which can be given online should you use) CAN be completed electronically.

The longest part is entering each class individually, but the rest isn't too difficult. Good luck on everyones app!:)

Do u have to pay the $45 app fee to NursingCAS as well as the app fee for SMU?? I am confused about this...

I haven't sent in my app yet, because I am waiting for all my transcript (7 to be exact) to be sent to NursingCAS.

When I spoke to the admissions counselor and also reviewing the online terms, it seems that the only fee you will send is directly to NursingCAS and nothing to SMU.

Hello :)

I called Eugenia (one of the SMU admissions counselors) to clarify about the personal statement. I was told that with the new CAS system, they are no longer using the 3 writing samples but are instead requiring applicants to write the 500 word max personal statement that is submitted online to CAS.

Basically, everything (including the trasnscript, letters of rec, and personal statement) will be submitted online :)

Hello GTSUI. Congrats on applying, which campus are you applying to?

They are no longer requiring the 3 writing samples in the standard form although NursingCAS covers all the topics that were initially included in the writing samples in a different format, not an essay format. In the CAS, they want you to individually list your community involvement, your healthcare experience, honors and awards, employment, etc. So that basically covers two of the previous writing examples. Then the personal statement covers the final writing sample.

So they do encompass all of the original information just in another method, which I actually prefer.

*It was just the tedious task of entering each course that made me crazy!!!*

Hi Victory925!

I am applying to both the San Mateo and Sacramento campuses. Are you applying to both as well? :)

Thanks for the clarification! Are you listing out the duties or actually writing in paragraph form for the Health/Patient Related Experience, etc. sections because 130 word limit gives so little room to express ourselves..

I am only applying to Sacramento. Can't relocate, although I wish I could...

I wrote it in paragraph form. You could probably include more in bullet form though. Just my preference I guess, you?

Have you sent in your transcript requests yet? I'm still waiting for mine to show up in the system. There is nothing under my transcripts or my GPA calculation. Is there anything on yours?

I just made requested for transcripts yesterday and today. I'll let you know when mines show up in the system :) I was thinking of bullet form to make it easier on the reader as well? I might use both forms depending on how much room I have.

SO- 5 of my 7 transcripts were received by the NCAS. I was reading through the FAQ's and it says that they will not compute your GPA until you have submitted your app and they have received all your transcripts, although you can submit your app before they get them all. If you have four or more errors, they will notify you to change.

If you have a class IP then you will have to send that transcript directly to SMU after it has been completed.

Ugh, ;)

ohhh good to know! when did you request for the transcripts? i just requested mines 1-2 days ago. so im not sure how long it will take for it to show up on CAS. 1 week maybe?? oh yeaa.. to answer your question earlier, i ended up using both paragraph (to shortly introduce the volunteer experience) and then just listed the duties to squeeze in as much as i could :p

i was actually having some questions about what i should do with the in progress classes! and now i know. thanks :)

do you know how long it takes to process the letters of recommendation? to avoid confusion, i want to let them do paper version, but it might take longer than the electronic method..

I actually did the electronic version because I felt it was easier for those who recommend, one of them filled it out in like 10 minutes or so. On the FAQ's, it said it takes a while longer if you are doing the paper version.

I am going to the Admissions overview today at 2:00. I am going to ask them about the stats from lasts years accepted students for the ABSN program, so I can see where I fall in at.

I am also going to discuss financial aid with them because I am going to have to quit my job to attend nursing school, so I want to make sure they have some kind of option so that FAFSA does not base my EFC on my last years income, but rather at 0 for when I am unemployed.

I am planning to cocktail or bartend though possibly on weekends just to get some extra cash...
