So . . .is nursing your final stop?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I'm wondering what everyone's goals are. Are you just going for an RN, BSN, MS or is your ultimate goal something a little different?

Personally I want to work as an RN for a while and if I like the healthcare profession I'll be going for NP or PA degree. So nursing is just a foot in the door for me. Anyone else?

Specializes in med/surg, telemetry.

I'm graduating this May with my BSN. I plan on working in surgical telemetry for a year or so and continue back to school for my masters in nursing education. Plan on maybe being an instructor at the college and still manage some clinical work time as well. We'll have to wait and see how things fall into place.

I'm going for an accelerated BSN, because I'm pretty sure I'll at least want a masters and I didn't want any extra steps with bridge programs and the like. I definitely think I would enjoy being an NP, and with my first degree being in psych, it might be the area I will end up in. I don't want to shut any doors though - I want to find out more about what a CRNA does, and make the attempt to keep my grades high enough that I could pursue that if I so chose.

Specializes in Psych ICU, addictions.
I'll start with my Associates, then have a hospital pay for my BSN, if I'm so motivated, than I'll get an MSN and go for a Nurse Practitioner.

That pretty much describes my plan of attack too :) Except that instead of the NP (or maybe along with), I'd like to become a Lactation Consultant.

As far as I understand you do not need anything past an ADN to become a lactation consultant. I worked at a local hospital here as an assistant program coordinator and there were two lactation consultants in our office -- one had her BSN and the other her ADN. Aside from their lactation certificates, they had many other certificates that related to gynecology issues along with newborn babies. And both were also certified diabetic educators.

ADN, BSN (because it will only take two semesters to complete part-time), then MSN-NP. The sky is the limit for me since I still have "connections" from my former and present work life. So, the more education I have, the easier it is for me to justify a six figure salary and five-figure bonuses. :D My ultimate goal is to move into Health Care Management on the Executive level. I might teach part-time for fun.

Specializes in Home Health, Case Management, OR.

I am currently awaiting entrance into the ADN program. After that is completed I am planning on working while going to school for my RN-BSN. Ideally I would love to be a NP, but we will see where I end up happiest in my work.

I plan on becoming an RN, ADN first then part-time school my way to BSN. Hopefully bedside nursing will make me happy for awhile--I like doing CNA work, wish I could do more. But, bodies wear out and minds get bored! I want to get my BSN with a minor in social work or administration...or something! So that maybe when and if bedside becomes too much or not fulfilling for me--I can possibly get into something related to healthcare, but not entirely hands-on patient care.

Working on getting in a program for my BSN. Right now. Id love to do research

I want to be a midwife but I need to start working as soon as possible so I'm taking baby steps.

My 10-year plan looks something like this:

Finish ASN

Work at hospital as RN

Work part-time towards my BSN

Get my MSN/become CNM

Let's just hope I can squeeze all that into 10 years, lol. I will get there someday.

I have plans, not sure which direction I'll go, I'm keeping things open until I get a feel for areas that I really like. I will start an ADN program in the fall and then I will work and pursue my BSN. Then I am entertaining the idea of coming into the Army and having them pay for any advanced education (along with a portion of my BSN), but I am not completely sure about that yet :) (hubby is in the army) I am interested in continuing school and pursuing NP, CRNA or PA...I definitely know I want to keep moving with school, just not sure what direction I want to go. As another poster said, this is one of the reasons I was so attracted to nursing, there are so many possibilities.

Good to know, thanks! Then being a lactation consultant and NP is very possible indeed :D

I will be entering a Diploma program this September, and will graduate in May 2009. Upon becoming an RN, I will work in a hospital for a couple of years, gaining experience in both med-surg and psych. I would like to complete an RN-MSN program and become a psychiatric NP. My goal is to accomplish this by the time I turn 40 (I'm 32 now).

I would like to be a psychiatric NP with my own practice one day, and also teach and do research at a university. I'd also like to get into travel nursing at some point, seeing different parts of the USA as well as going to different countries.
