Chemistry, what's it all about?

My school has this chemistry proficiency exam that you can take if you haven't taken chemistry in highschool. Has anyone taken a chemistry proficiency exam? Has anyone taken highschool chemistry? What kinds of things are taught in highschool chemistry? This is for a technical college, so I was thinking maybe I could just check out a book and go take the exam. Is it just memorizing the periodic table of elements? Thanks in advance!

It's a bit more, actually a whole lot more that the periodic elements, it's all about the atom, atomic weights, chemical reactions, on and on and on.

Go to the bookstore and thumb through a copy of "Chemistry For Dummies" and that will give you an idea of what it's about. You might be able to read that book and pass the test. It's a bit much for a post in a message board to explain Chemistry, even the basics.

Good luck!

hi, jsta_grl83. try checking out the information on this web site. this should help you get through your exam.

http://regentsprep.org/regents/chem/onlineresources/index.cfm - this is an online resource with many links to all kinds of help with chemical subjects on a website for preparing for the new york regent's exam in high school chemistry. within the links are explanations of the topics as well as some worksheets with answers, particularly in solving equations.

jsta_grl83 Welcome to this site. :)

I’ve registered for basic chemistry for spring 2006, the site may help with the class if needed. :)

Thank you,

Excellent, thanks for the suggestions.

Hi, I just finished Intro to Chemistry for todays health. It wasn't that bad just alot to study and remember. We really didn't have to memorize the elements it was a combination of everything, protons, electrons, neutrons, formula weights and knowing the different kinds of bonds e..g. polar,(water) non-polar (gasoline)and it does involve alot of math or atleast mine did. We'd have to know the names of elements put together e.g. N20 ..dinitrogen monoxide ( uses a prefix because it's 2 nonmetals. A metal and a nonmetal end in (ide)If i can do it after being out of school for 15 years and being a math dummy anyone can do it, just make sure you sit in front of the class, ask questions, even stay over an ask if you don't know something, MOST IMPORTANT don't miss a class because when you go back you will be lost. You will do fine, it's kind of fun too.

There is also a chemistry club going. You will find lots of others in your place and useful info.

Good luck
