I am currently an undergraduate, this summer I will have completed all of my Prerequisites to apply for Nursing School. My current struggles consist of the following : My poor GPA of 2.38, The fact that this is my fourth year of school and I am just now completing the prerequisites, I have failed Chemistry 3 times and I am taking it a fourth time this summer. And so many people and Advisers have told me to "give up" and change my major to Health Sciences or Biology Education Major. I am having an extremely difficult time taking that advice because, I know I can become a Nurse and I am not willing to give up! I have looked at ADN as an option and I have all of the classes to apply for it now. As a short term goal I would like to go from ADN to BSN and long term goal is to get into and Anesthetics program. If there is any hope for me that you know of please let me know. I'm freaking out over this because I know that Nursing is very competitive and my GPA is no where near competition ready. But the main focus for me is finding a way to do what I love and that is Nursing. I need realistic views and answers! Thank you all in advance
Slim to no chance, just keeping it real. First failure should have evoked an unyielding determination to pass, however at this point you just keep slamming your head against the wall and wondering why it isn't working. Keep doing what you've done and you'll keep getting what you've always gotten. How many times did you make appointments with tutors? Try to get extra help? Looked at your exams/quizes and looked at every wrong answer, figured out why you got it wrong? Your situation sounds like a strong lack of discipline to me. If you want a shot, you HAVE to change your study habits and your attitude toward education, period. This isn't negativity, this is 110% raw fresh from the oven fully cooked truth served with an olive on a toothpick
Does your school have a tutoring center? If so, you should utilize it, and if not, you should talk to your chemistry professor and ask him/her to recommend a tutor.
In all honesty, with that low of a GPA and the number of times you have had to take chemistry, it is going to be very difficult to get into college or university nursing programs as most are very competitive. Depending on the schools in your area, you may be able to pull it off if you score very well on the entrance exam and manage to bring your GPA up a little by passing chemistry and taking (and acing) a couple more classes to get it up there. You should speak to an admissions counselor about your options. Worst case, there are always the for-profit schools that will take students with lower GPAs.
Hey have you thought about changing your teacher ? Getting a tutor ? And you still can get in the program if that's what your school requires. I know my school require 2.5 TEAS test pass chemistry or microbiology with a c or better but they only give you 3 attempts. Along with your other prerequisites classes. I hope you pass get a tutor use flash cards !
Many schools have a cap on how many times you can take a class to replace the failed grade. I have yet to find one that is more than 3 but maybe. Basically, that f will likely stay on your transcript and basically average out when you take chem again and if you pass. But to be real with you, outside of the private schools that will accept anyone who can pay over $50000 for their ASN, your options are SUPERS limited. To fail 3 times shows you either didn't try, or didn't remediate after your failure. You will not pass nursing school if you are not able to self reflect when you do poorly in order to do better next time. And Chem is a cake walk compared to nursing core courses. So you either need to buck up and actually try or just quit and find something else. Not everyone who wants to be a nurse will be.
I'm sorry to say it, but I don't think this bodes well for your nursing career. Beyond the basic GPA problems you will now encounter, there is also the problem of understanding SCIENCE. yes, nursing is a soft science, but it is a science nonetheless. It really helps to have a grasp of the basics, such as biology and chemistry, before delving into nursing school. There is a good reason such courses are prerequisites. It seems like you have trouble understanding science-related courses; as such, I would strongly urge you to reconsider your career choices. I'm sorry.
I struggled with chemistry too. It took a lot, and I mean a lot, of work to scrape out a C, which is barely passing in my school. So I don't fault you for failing or having a hard time, I'm just wondering why after the second fail you didn't try remedial courses. In the off chance that your school will even allow a retake (and have it considered), I would not jump right into chem and start with more basic sciences. Also, I would utilize a tutor, private if I had to. I would NOT take it over summer. That's twice the pace and going to be twice as difficult.
If I can pass Chemistry, ANYBODY can pass Chemistry! I lived in the tutoring department and needed one on one help to understand it. I was in a class with a very difficult instructor and about half the students dropped by the end. You need to chose a good instructor and get help from a tutor!
I majorly screwed up when I began college right out of highschool. Failed all my classes in my first semester because I was mad at my mom for forcing me to enroll when I didnt want to. I didnt drop any because I was afraid of getting in trouble. When I returned to school out of my own free will and my own money (of course mom refused to pay after that), I got straight A's. After a certain amount of time on acedemic probation, I proved I was serious and so they forgave my failing grades. My GPA went from a .666 to 3.8 in one day. I ended up going to another nearby college because at the time, the other one didnt have a nursing program. I was able to transfer some classes and took the rest at the new college. I made sure to get all A's in the biology courses. I never had any trouble getting accepted to the nursing programs I applied to. I jumped a ton of hoops and managed to be an in-district student at 4 different community colleges at the same time. I wanted a better chance of acceptance so I used other people's addresses. I ended up chosing the college that I actually resided in. Dont give up! I somehow pulled myself out of that mess and graduated. It took me awhile but thats ok.
I am working on my RN degree via The College Network. (Tip - do NOT use the College Network) I failed Anatomy and Physiology II four times. To say the least, I was discouraged. The College Network told me I would now have to take Excelsior College's A&P exam. Excelsior is where my degree will come from. I was scared. I started over. Stopped using TCNs lame materials. Bought myself a used textbook and devised an entirely new way to study, which involved following Excelsior's outline of what you are expected to know, the quiet room at the library, a lot of note taking, chapter by chapter. I then typed those notes into Google Drive in outline form. I took Excelsior's test and got a A! I feel that I failed TCNs test for a reason. It wasn't really teaching me what I need to know. I learned SO MUCH MORE by forcing myself to grind through. In the end, I got an A!!!!!!! I succeeded on an immensely higher level than TCN was even asking. I now use this method for all my studying. PLease don't give up. Chemistry is DIFFICULT! You are not stupid. Do you hear me? You are NOT stupid! This course is difficult. Try try again!

If you're having difficulty with chemistry, I wouldn't take it over the summer. It's only gonna make it more difficult since it's so compacted & sped up.
