Hi I'm new to this
I saw the site and read through a few convos and found it very helpful so I figured I would get more info if I ask my own questions.
I'm a pre-nursing student at a community college i've done pretty much most of my pre-reqs and have like 6-7 classes left b4 i apply to a nursing program(whic i havent decided) so here are my questions:
1) my current gpa is 3.02 and thats without my micro and chem II...so is that a bad gpa cause it is competion out there in the "nursing world" and im not sure if i may be able to get in
2) I havent chose a school yet...its a bit hard cause of school requirements differ from one another and trying to satify all of them is driving me NUTS!!! my question is when decided the decidin school what do yall look for( ex. would u pick a 2yr vs a 3yr program or a high well known school vs a low not well know school ex emory vs columbus state)
3) if you dont have a volunteer experience, would your appl. be okay??
4) payment wise....how expensive is it REALLY?? i know its alot but how much is a lot!??
pls and thank you :)
Wow, I am truly amazed by some of these responses. First, I would like to say this is a casual enviroment that people can voice their concerns and feelings and shouldn't have to worry about being grahmatically correct. Second, I would like to state that the idea of acting professionaly is brought up, do you really think that not spell checking your posts or abbreviating things is less professional then being critical and rude to one another? I have worked in a professional enviorment and I know my manners will always come before worrying about a silly typo. Maybe those of us who think treating people like that is acceptable should be looking into a different career path.

The issue of spelling and punctuation has been debated numerous times on here. I agree with Texas - he wasn't being mean but simply stating facts. I think that we should all strive to use proper spelling and punctuation on these boards. We never know who is on these boards, and what kind of information we offer could be used to put two and two together for someone else to find out who we are.
As an example, if the OP were in the running for a competitive nursing school, interview included, and someone on the selection committee who felt that punctuation and spelling were important even in a forum environment like this, happened to determine who the OP was - the OP could possibly lose a spot in the nursing program, or lose out on an externship, or job opportunity. I think it is wise to be wary of how we communicate on here for we never know who is watching.
Now, to respond to the OP:
1) my current gpa is 3.02 and thats without my micro and chem II...so is that a bad gpa cause it is competion out there in the "nursing world" and im not sure if i may be able to get in
Yes. It is a bad GPA - not to sound harsh, but you are not competitive at all with that GPA. Work hard in your Micro and Chem II classes, and see if you can take courses to replace some that you had a bad grade in. For example, I got a B- in ENG 101 and retook a 200 level English course and got a 4.0 - that 200 level course with a 4.0 replaced my B- in the 101 class. Like a PP mentioned, you may look at a wait list based school.
2) I havent chose a school yet...its a bit hard cause of school requirements differ from one another and trying to satify all of them is driving me NUTS!!! my question is when decided the decidin school what do yall look for( ex. would u pick a 2yr vs a 3yr program or a high well known school vs a low not well know school ex emory vs columbus state)
You have to decide what is best for you. I am at Arizona State University getting my BSN - I am an out of state resident so for the first year I am paying $17k and after that, about $7k per year. I'm a huge believer in education/college not just as a requirement for jobs, etc. but as an experience for myself, so loans aren't an incredible concern for me. I'm also applying for lots of scholarships (wish me luck! ) - but again, you have to decide for yourself. Be wary of for-profit schools and if you choose one of those, make sure they are accredited, and take with a grain of sand what admissions reps tell you and find out from previous students, as the admissions reps have been known to exaggerate certain aspects of the program.
3) if you dont have a volunteer experience, would your appl. be okay??
Maybe. But...volunteer if possible. If you like it, you could always get your CNA license and work as a CNA. Sometimes that can open doors for you. Also, some schools will take into consideration volunteer experience and/or health care employment prior to NS.
4) payment wise....how expensive is it REALLY?? i know its alot but how much is a lot!??
It DEPENDS. Some private schools will run you $30-40k for an ADN. Some state schools will run you $30-40k for a BSN. Some private colleges (example: Pacific Lutheran University, a well respected private liberal arts college in WA state that offered a nursing program) will run you $80k with no loans. Remember, scholarships and financial aid are your best friends - you just have to take the time to apply for scholarships.
Also - don't listen to your advisor regarding that you "did well" in your sciences - you might have passed, but you absolutely DID NOT do well enough in your science classes if you are getting Cs and Bs. I'm not being mean, just realistic, and trying to help. Good luck!
Okay your point is who is watching? My question is who do you think is watching, this is all anonymous and there's a reason for that. There is never an excuse to act like a pretentious nasty person. If puncuation is such a problem then you could say that and you could say it in a nice way. She didn't say it in a nice way she actually spent God knows how much time writing a step by step sarcastic response and how that can be deamed necesarry is beyond me. Whoever thinks its reasonable to treat others that way should be ashamed of themselves, not to mention what I've been taught in school and it violates the values and morals of the nursing profession.
Step 1. You need be learned to make sentance good.
Seriously? This sentence has more than one problem.
Step 2. About step 1, take it seriously, or no one will take you seriosuly. You are planning on being a professional, play the role.
Step 3. You should get that Vol exp, otherwise how do you know that nursing is for you?
Step 4. Apply before you finish all your courses, this is not only ok but the best way to go about getting you into the workforce as fast as possiable.
Step 5. Again since your grades are not so great, and your grammar is lacking, you absolutely need to vol in order to have schools even write you a rejection letter. I mean lets get real, I have a 4.0, I am a veteran, I vol at the VA, I have amazing letters of rec, a 90 on the TEAS and great personal statements, but all of this still might not be enough to get in to a good nursing school, do you honestly think you have a shot without bringing more to the table then a 3.02
Sorry if this sounds mean, but I am trying to help you out so you can get in.
I've put in bold some of your own misspellings and abbreviations. I also want to point out that you have plenty of sentence structure and grammatical errors yourself. Perhaps you should practice what you preach?
Seriously? This sentence has more than one problem.Umm that was the point, are you daft?

I know that my grammar is not perfect (although I am working on it, I have more of a scientific mindset), and will never claim it to be otherwise, but I am not sitting on a 3.02 GPA and no Vol work. I can afford a few mistakes, for everything else is on the up and up. I was merely pointing out that a 3.02 requires alot of polish.
And iluvpatho, who said I was female, you have some issues if you think only females can be nurses. "God knows how much time?" Ha maybe it would take you a great deal of time to bust out 5 steps of text, but for the normal person it takes seconds. I know it came off harsh, but guess what, life is harsh. It is better that the OP get this in her or his head so that they can improve and get into nursing school. There is too much coddling and ignorance of the truth on this website and it is not helping people. Encouragement is great, but to tell someone that everything is going to be ok when it is not is doing them a dis-service.
But you guys and girls win. I take it all back. OP, you and you application are just perfect the way God made you, and it is certain that you will get into Nursing School with a 3.02, poor grammar and no volunteer experience because I now see it is wrong from me to attempt to help you improve. It is infact down right mean of me to to anything but encourage you to continue along your chosen path. It is your path, who am I do try to make it easier for you down the road when you may not have the energy to tackle issues you can take care of now.:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe
Texas please, like you don't know the majority in nursing is female? I like how your only response is to try and cut me down. Nice work you really got me because yes it would take a long time for me to think of ways to act like an immature and un-classy person. I have no doubts who I am and my accomplishments. If your only response to someone telling you to be a little kinder is to be more nasty you are the one who maybe has their own issues. As far as you saying I think all nurses are woman is stupid, do you think I think all service people are women too-try thinking a little bit
Thank goodness someone is kind out there. This site is to support and help one another.
I could not agree with you more, this purpose of this site is to help one another, and that is exactly what I was trying to do. I am not as sensitive as alot of you on here, but that doesn't make me wrong. I love my professors that tell it how it is, too many of them sugar coat things and what good does that do? How does it help to tell someone that they will suceed when in reality they have little chance? Isn't better to tell them the truth so that they can improve their product (in this case themselves) and not waste time and money (applications are not cheap esp when multiple schools are being applied to?
Umm that was the point, are you daft?
I was actually hoping you weren't just being mean spirited. Apparently I was wrong. I was merely pointing out your writing skills are less than professional as well.
Congratulations on your terrific GPA. I envy those who breeze through math and science. Not all of us are that blessed! I honestly agree that those of us (my overall GPA is just above 3.0 as well- but I have a lot of prereqs to complete so I intend on bringing that up) with low GPA do need to work hard to bring them up. I don't disagree with that advice. I do however, take offense to the spirit at which you gave said advice.
Cheers!

I have no clue what you think. You addressed me as a female, and I was letting you know that I am a male, thats all. You dont need to get all defensive. I am not trying to cut anyone down, but if you see it that way then I am sorry. I don't see the truth as unclassy or immature, infact I see it as a sign of respect ( yes my step 1 was rude, but it was to show a point).
