Positive Thoughts

I have been reading so many threads lately and it seems everyone hates nursing and their career choice. I would think it is very discouraging to read that over and over and am beginning to think that just like when you are working with a group of negative people your positive thoughts diminish soooooo....

I am not saying I love every aspect of my job however after reading alot of the recent posts I can say I count my blessings that I have the job that I do have. I know things could be different with management, schedule and general work environment to make things better at times however I do believe that the grass isnt always greener on the other side so to speak and I feel that ask anyone in any profession and they will also feel they have it rough.

In general I feel very appreciated by the patients and their families, love my co-workers, management does listen on a individual basis and I am very well paid for my time. I think some other positive thoughts needs to be expressed in order to pick up the good aspects of nursing because like I said earlier when you are surrounded by negativity then the positive feelings diminish.

Happy Holidays!

Nursing allowed me, as a single mom, to support myself and my kids (with absolutely no assistance whatsoever from their father) --- all while working 3 days a week. That's a pretty damned big positive in my opinion...

Just want to say thanks for this thread from a new grad who is about to begin working. It is scary as hell to read some of the stories in these threads. I want to go into my first job with eyes wide open and certainly I know from life experience that every job/career has its down side. I was in the military, so I know what working in a stressful, pressure filled environment without proper resources/people feels like. However, constantly reading negative posts is getting me down and I feel like I might be going into my job looking for the worst in the situation instead of looking at things from an optimistic point of view like I usually do.

Maybe I just need to take a break from reading here until I can come back with my own war stories.:chair:

No negative thoughts here, never have been! I have vented here about specific things that have happened, but overall I love nursing and always have. I have been doing this for over 19 years and have no intention of leaving the profession. Nursing is so diverse that when I burned out on the ER I never considered doing anything else, I just went to another nursing field.

Yes . You are right negativity is kind of contagious so let me say that despite my occasional rants, I do love nursing.

The pay is good and the work you do makes a difference in the lives of people.

I do not ever feel like I am stuck doing something meaningless that I hate.

So to people looking at this site ... We don't all hate nursing, our patients,or their families, our coworkers, or the doctors . (well not all of them anyway)

:welcome:

So don't be driven away. Come on and join us.

We need you!

Glad to hear that things are working out for you in your life circumstances but please don't be too hard on those that are expressing "negativity". One of the big advantages of this board is that people come here to vent their frustrations and to get feedback from others when they encounter problems at work. If they can get it out of their system on this board, then go to work and treat their patients appropriately, then the board has served a useful purpose. I believe a member stated a long time ago that allnurses provides free therapy. For many it is the only therapy they will get. You should tell us where you work! We all need to work where we can get just a teensy weensy bit of respect or appreciation once in awhile!

I think this everyday I come on these forums, I think,

"omg am I the only person who loves her job?"

Well, for me, nothing but my own experiences can make me feel anyway about anything. Negativity from others does not affect me. I am my own person and you have to remember that you are your own. You cannot let others form your perception of things. Now, having said that, I must say the following.

I don't feel that it's so much negativity, as it is frustration that a lot of nurses are expressing here on allnurses. It's more like frustration that many of us cannot provide the quality of care we would like to due to silly things like budgets, money dictating ratios/staffing and etc. Any nurse that wants to provide good care would have an objection to many of the things that healtcare has become. I can honestly say that yes, I do complain. But it's out of concern, not negative thoughts, that I speak up. And if we all just accept things the way they are, nothing will ever change. I truly hope more nurses speak up and stop accepting the work environment many of us deal with. It is not conducive to care and it's time for a change.

First off, I would like to say that I love nursing! I worked very hard to get where I am and I appreciate the skills that the nursing profession has taught me. However, as a new RN with a fresh license and working in a crazy environment..I do come to this board to complain, thank, give/get words of encouragement and so on. I think that this is an appropriate way to find good advice. My fiance is a RN as well and he works ER and he never deals with the type of issues that I have to deal with on a regular basis. It's good that there are nurses that love their job as I once did when I worked pediatrics but since I have made that change, my fire has grew dim while working in a busy, short-staffed, new and not so helpful environment. I just keep praying that one day I will find my happy spot again, but until then I will not keep inside the true stories of my nursing experience.

It's comforting to know that there are others out there going through and/or have went through similar experiences as me but have found a way out and/or are looking for a way out.

I in no way meant to say that this board shouldn't be used to express concerns or vent frustrations and I realize its a good place to go when you do need to talk or get opinions and I do understand at one point we all need to do that. There are things about the profession I do not always like also but my point of this thread in general was I"ve read alot of posts lately ranting in general about the whole nursing profession and how much it's disrespected and hated which I do think leads to increased negative feelings.

I totally understand being frustrated at times and praying for my next day off but in general I am happy with my choice and I think that if someone has absolutely nothing good to say about their career choice then its time to leave the profession....we all get frustrated and need to vent but totally trash nursing is a completely different story.

I wasnt trying to offend anyone I just wanted to start a thread that would lift the positive feelings about our choices and maybe remind nurses that although things arent perfect there are reasons we are in the profession we are.

I never said I let others form my perception of things but you have to agree that if you are working around positive people its much more pleasant than working about negative people and that being said I still say I am not blind to the negative things about nursing and the healthcare system however once in awhile alittle positive has to come out however somehow the negative overrides it....just like this thread.....it started out on a positive note but some still had to bring up negative things instead of just letting that go and doing like mother used to always tell us....if you have nothing good to say then dont say anything at all. Im not saying that should be the case on this board but could it just once be the case in this thread?
