Portage learning Chemistry course

Anyone have any current reviews or advice for Portage learning by Geneva College. I like to take a Chemistry course to transfer to UMASS in Boston.

The school via email did not give me alot info. They told me they have accepted students by Portage but not Chemistry and won't know until they do a transfer evaluation. I don't want to take it and have them not accept the course. Any thing you know or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

I would not even consider it unless I got a definite yes on the transfer. I think the only school that really accepts their credits is Geneva college. If there is a lab component your school may want it done in person.

Thanks for your response. They told me they had accepted other courses but not Chemistry. So I was reluctant to register. It's just fustrating when they tell won't know until they do the transfer evaluation. I also was referred to portage learning thru Northeastern University for their accelerated RN prg.

What wound up happening with this?? I am applying to UMass Boston and Salem State and was also told to take classes on Portage, so I have been... did they wind up accepting your credits?

I know this is an old post, but I'm starting an accelerated BSN program at Villanova University this summer, and they directly recommended CHE 108 at Portage Learning via Geneva College. I was going to take Organic Chem at a local community college, but it's the same price to take it online, plus the class is self-paced. My school said " Portage Learning through Geneva College is also is good option if you haven't started classes yet. (CHE 108) Their courses are high quality and very reasonably priced." so I'm going that route!

Just finished the first module exam for chemistry through Portage Learning - it's a good program (not a cake walk, but well done). The transcripts will come from Geneva College and when I looked at an unofficial transcript, Portage is mentioned at the bottom as the facilitator of the course FOR Geneva College (and Geneva is a legit, regionally accredited school). I've checked with Baylor and with Midwestern State, and both will take pre-reqs from Geneva (Portage). If your school of choice will not accept online labs, there's a bit of a gamble going this route because even though the transcript is through Geneva, and says Geneva College, they may recognize the Portage element from experience as being online. Here's what's at the very bottom of the unofficial transcript - (the top just looks like a Geneva College transcript):

"This document is being furnished at the request of the student... (says it's unofficial). Portage Learning is the division of Geneva College that offers courses to students seeking to transfer courses to their home institution where they intend to pursue a degree primarily in the health professions. The completed classes are listed as institutional credit on a Geneva College transcript. Portage Learning functions as the facilitator for the Geneva-Portage courses. Therefore, inquiries for Geneva-Portage courses are to be directed to Portage Learning either via phone at 1-888-724-3590 or e-mail [email protected]."

You have to give the specific class to be safe. I've been told "yeah, we accept Portage" only later to find out they only accept some classes from Portage. Luckily I'm beginning the process and trying to wrap up 1 more prereq.

The school you are interested in applying to should have some document (usually available online) that lists which courses are accepted or equivalent. You may need to get this in writing from the admissions office.

As a faculty member, even I do not get direct answers from schools regarding which courses are equivalent, etc.

HI! I just started Chemistry through portage yesterday. I have to finish it (along with anatomy 2 on portage) by August 21. Do you guys think that is doable? How long did it take you to complete each module? A little bit overwhelmed currently by the amount of stuff needed to complete (each module lesson, module practice problems, module exam, lab work, lab exam, etc...) Literally any insight would be helpful. Thank you guys so much!

I only took A&P 1 through portage and it took me 6 months or so, but I wasn't racing to meet a strict deadline and had other in person classes going on. I actually think the content at Portage is harder, especially for anyone that tries to learn the material and is honest in how they take the test. Tests are almost all short answer/fill in the blank. My in person A&P 2 had multiple choice tests through lockdown brower.

Labs are also harder. 8 lab tests/quizzes after every lab and you need to know intricate details. One of the reasons it took me so long is because open notebook is allowed for the Lab, so you'll want to basically have most of what she says verbatim, along with sketches of anything from the fetal pig or anatomical dummy that you might get quizzed on. It's not as simple as watching the lab and taking the test. It's watching, pausing, taking notes, rewinding a little, or just rewatching the whole thing again. a 30 minute lab might take a few hours, but it guarantees you'll have the material for the test.

Labs were a bit ridiculous in my opinion - I would dictate everything said in the video verbatim onto my Word app in iPhone and I took screen shots constantly so I had detailed and searchable notes and STILL found it a challenge. In-person would have been MUCH easier I think, but I was also going for all A’s so maybe I would feel different if I had only cared about getting passing credit. Keep the corrected answers from all your tests on hand to study because a bunch of those will show up in the final.
