Thought this would give us all a nice visual once folks place their vote.

Currently, I am in Ortho-Neuro Med Surg.

Also, I have placed a similar poll in our Male Nursing Student Forum. That poll can be viewed here:

https://allnurses.com/forums/f213/poll-male-nursing-school-my-goal-desire-work-area-155146.html

Good comparison threads when viewed together.

Specializes in LTC,ICU,ANESTHESIA.

I think you forgot anesthesia as an option in your poll. We CRNAs are nurses also.

Specializes in med-surg, radiology, OR.

Eew? why was interventional radiology not on the list? :)

I'm a gulf vet too...lol. I guess that figures....;)

Me too!:banghead:

Wow, nobody has posted in here in over a year...it's been two years since I posted in this particular thread, and probably about that long since I posted on the site at all...

I have since moved out of the hospital where I worked in the neuroscience IMCU, turned out it was bad for my health (I did learn a lesson from it: Never accept a job offer made immediately during your interview). I have since returned to active status with the private duty home health agency that I have worked with off and on since 2001, before and between trouble ridden stints in hospitals) and waiting for the current hiring freeze situation to end, in hope to return to a hospital setting again (and hopefully the right one, if the third time is a charm). That or I'll go work at Walmart.

oops, I looked at the last reply date before mine, and looked at it wrong...hasn't been a year after all...scuse me!

Specializes in Coronary Rehab Unit.

"Other" ..... CRU - Cardiac Rehab Unit

Med/Surg. 13 year absence from nursing after getting MBA and rising to President of HMO and then becoming private investor. Wiped out in recent real estate bust, back in nursing to rebuild my business. Was old ICU/CCU nurse. I took med/surg because they were the only ones to offer me a job, all about tasks and charting. Not very exciting.

Specializes in Correctional RN.

Correctional RN, love it...

I am a male and a brand new RN. I am fortunate to have landed a job. I am in orientation as a Geriatric Psychiatric/Medical Surgical nurse. There are 2 other male nurses in the department.

Most areas are actually diverse and require nurses skilled in multiple specialties. People who get attached to specialties tend to become somewhat provincial and their learning curve shrinks

Specializes in Public Health.

I work in the Neonatal ICU. I think I'm 1 of 5 males in the entire deparment.

I think there is something wrong with this poll. I have worked in many of the areas noted and do not think the numbers are factually correct. I have not seen appreciably higher numbers of nurses in icu and er as this poll would make it appear. Actually I have seen the most in specialty areas such as cath lab and surgery
