Plz help with Bumex, amio, dopamine, cardizem calculations!

Published

Hi, I'm a new grad and would like to know the answers to some calculations to know if I am doing them right.

1. Cardizem ordered at 15mg/hr. Concentration 100mg/100ml of 0.9 NS. What do I run the pump at?

2. Integrilin orders 2mcg/kg/min (pt is 60kg). What rate will the pump be set at?

3. Bumex to be administered at 1mg/hr. Concentration 12.5mg in a 50ml bag. Pump set at?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Being impatient, I thought it might take a while to get responses and know if I had done them correctly, so I asked for answers up front, not realizing this was unacceptable.

Please feel free to continue to ask questions, even if they're easy.

Some say nurses tend to eat their young, I have no idea why they would get that impression.

There were no discussion boards when I was a new nurse, and my first job out of school was neonatal ICU. So many of the meds were pedi-dosage, and had to be calculated.

We asked each other to do the math, and we compared the answers. If anyone reached a different answer, we all did it again. Then we reviewed each others' math to see what the difference was. We made sure that everyone knew how to do the math, because a little bit off was so devasting to the babies.

Be careful of your decimal points!!

The exact reason why we don't give the information first.

You didn't even try.--the exact reason why I--ME--will not give answers.

Now...if you want to have a discussion on Kierkegaard or Keynesian Economics...I am in....

Then why do you come into this type of thread? Is it your job or something to scold those darned losers who think they're going to steal all YOUR precious nursing knowledge BY GOD?

I seriously laughed out loud as I re-read this craziness! Just a bunch of passionate individuals expressing view points, and what the hell is wrong with that? :)

I am not a working nurse yet...just moved and passed boards but no job yet, just reviewing some material a friend who is working gave me and originally at first glance thought I would need help since many were ICU drugs that I had no experience with (and had the questions but no answers to them). Being impatient, I thought it might take a while to get responses and know if I had done them correctly, so I asked for answers up front, not realizing this was unacceptable. Once I worked the problems, I realized the ones I posted were super easy and didn't require help. I can see how it would look like a student looking for answers to homework, but seriously, I am not stupid enough to think that simply getting answers to questions, without the knowledge of actually knowing HOW to do them, would be of any benefit to me. Thank you though for the support!

One of the things you'll find is that it doesn't usually matter what kind of drug it is. The name of the med doesn't change the numbers. As long as you've got what you have and what you want, you'll be able to find your answer. Med math is beautiful that way.

Posting questions upfront, without giving us your (the collective your) answers sometimes makes us question if we're doing homework for you, or if you really, truly don't understand how to do the question. Also, it's easier if you can show us your answer, because then we can work the problem and show you where you might have gone wrong. It allows us to troubleshoot your problem solving and thinking skills, which, in the end is a little more beneficial to you than us just spitting out the answer to the problem.

Good luck to you, and please don't be afraid to come back and post more. Someone referred you to the student nurse forum's math sticky, which you may find helpful, just for a review.

I was on here looking for help to calculations because one..math isnt my strong point two my pharmacist has spoiled me and I cannot believe your answers on here. Are you not supposed to be a nurse? Arent nurses supposed to be helpful, non judgemental, respectful, compassionate human beings? The ones posting the negative comments on here, I believe to be in nursing for the money title or either need to retire due to burnout. Because I didnt read any compassion in these replies!! And the original poster should not even apologize regardless if she was being lazy or not by asking!!! Its our job on this board to be helpful..if you wanna be hardcore go myspace or twitter!!! This is a public board and people are entitled to their opinions but do so by keeping that crap in check. I come from home health and basic dr office since im an lvn. I grad in may w my rn, you dont see me answering her question like im from the mafia or something! Get a grip! And best believe what goes around comes around..someone will treat you the same way ecentually!

And for all we know, she hasn't updated her profile since she signed up in July of 2007.

Sure, ideally she ought to have provided some of her own answers for critique, but why can't we just take a question at face value and assume that she is really just looking to double check her own answers, that she already did?

Don't start eating our young before you're a nurse! LOL

She should have posted the answers she got when she did the calcs. That way, at least it would have looked like she tried, rather than, "Do my work for me."

No, some of us just believe there is merit in doing one's own work first before asking for help. That is not "eating our young," at least it wasn't when I was a student. It was expected. These days, many new nurses/students treat nurses with experience like vehicles to download information from.

Please...whether you felt she was trying to get answers before trying herself you could have ASKED her has she tried to do the problem herself before going hard in the paint on her. I know no one is perfect, the fact of the matter is ASSESS first before IMPLEMENTING and EVALUATING...FYI...I know for a fact somewhere in yalls 20's 30's 40' 50's 60's or however old you guys are, haven't needed help or been misconstrued about something. SO the moral of the story is HAVE A HEART!

There is a difference between "having a heart" and spoon feeding someone answers to questions. Many posters here are more than happy to help someone with a question when they show that they have put forth an effort to answer the question for themselves.

Babycakes,

For the love of all that is good, whatever in the world is the purpose of dredging up an old thread and immediately start berating previous posters. You are now trying to create animosity over a thread that you claim created animosity. That thread is over a year old. Do you see the irony ??

Blah.....blah....blah.

Here we go again, the "compassion" spiel. Spare me. Compassion within your profession and dealing with patients does NOT equate to answering homework questions on an internet forum. One is not required to be a bleeding-heart martyr in order to be a nurse. If you're not, you should retire? Go on myspace or twitter if we want to be "hardcore?" "Keep that crap in check?" You cannot be serious. What posts were answered by people "like they were in the mafia?"

Take your own advice and get a grip. I see you graduated in May....come back in 5 or 10 years, and read this again, just for a laugh.

This attitude is worse than any old "crusty" one.
