I am a nursing student. What does this mean:
"F rate to TKO"
The F had a arrow pointing down plus I know that TKO means to keep open.
Thank you

Never heard of that meaning anything.
Our facilty is clamping down on too many abbreviations that are confusing. The best policy to get the Docs to change their ways is to call them for any ambiguities, that way they are made more aware and confusing orders, esp if they get interupted and inconvenienced.

Decrease fluid rate to keep (vein) open; which is usually 10cc/hr.
Thanks
That's an unacceptable abbreviation, IMO. It's totally made up, I've never seen it in my life.

Abbreviations AND doctor's handwriting!
What do yall do about doctors poor penmanship?
I have a really hard time with some doctors at my facility, trying to decipher their chicken scratching.
Why do medical schools not address the problem of penmanship?

On our unit, we sometimes use "IVF" to refer to our maintanence fluid especially when labelling lines and pumps, but I've never seen just "F." I agree that it's unacceptable.

These days, too, we're instructed that TKO and the old KVO are unacceptable terms, that the order needs to be written for a specific ml/hr, e.g., 50ml/hr.

precisely. A rate MUST be stated.

can we request them (MD's) to indicate a specific rate? or is it just safe to presume tko or kvo means 10 drops per minute?

Yes, but I recommend that you don't call them at 0400 to ask for a clarification.
