So I get a call from one of my co-workers because I had not showed up for work. I had just looked at my schedule and it says that I was off tonight. According to the schedule at work, I was on. Ok, if you are gonna make changes tell me that way situations like this don't occur. I didn't switch with someone and I didn't pick up overtime. Just makes me crazy. Talked with a co-worker who said the manager printed out a new schedule friday. So I'm gonna email my manager tell me how this sounds..

Hi ANAM

]I am emailing you because I have concerns regarding my schedule. Nurse N called me Sunday night and asked if I was coming into to work. I had just looked at my schedule and it had an x under Sunday. I work monday night, then Friday and Saturday. I did not fill in the overtime board for Sunday nor did I make any switches that I am aware of (I don't have any yellow slips from the switch form). I wasn't aware that there were any changes to my schedule otherwise. I'm sorry to have inconvienced my co-workers if I was in the wrong. I will gladly make up the shift if need be.

I think your letter does a good job of explaining why you weren't at work, but it doesn't address the issue of the manager changing the schedule without letting you know. If I were you, I'd be more assertive about that part. I can sympathize with you....this kind of thing happens on my unit a lot too.

Honestly, this stuff makes me crazy. And I'm stressed out enough as it is, I almost started crying but I told my charge RN there was no way I could come in anyways since I had been up since 9am and working tonight would be absolutely unsafe. Apparently there were changes to the schedule made on Friday and that new schedule was printed out. I have a copy of my schedule to show management. I absolutely hate putting my co-workers in a bind. Thankfully they have enough staff.

I don't like it because it sounds like you are the one ready to take blame when you know in your heart you did nothing wrong. I would let them know you were made aware of the situation and that in the future if your hours are changed to pls let you know so you can not only check your availability but avoid this from happening again. Offering to make up the shift makes it sound like it was your fault and it wasn't. They really need to learn this is unacceptable because it puts some many people in a bad spot.

Here's what I would say:

Ironically this is my weekend off. I know I did not switch with anyone. I'm positive of it.

And now I'm gonna worry about it all night.

Why are you worrying when you did nothing wrong?! I don't even think you have to send an email if you don't want to. This isn't your fault and can be addressed next time you are on shift if it even comes up. It appears your co-workers are adequately staffed and realize this wasn't your fault. The person who should be concerned is the one who changed your schedule on Friday and didn't think to tell everyone changes were made so late in the game.

You're absolutely right. I won't see my ANAM till Tuesday and I'll deal with it then.

I would change one thing from what you wrote:

I was not MADE aware that there were changes made to the schedule. The 'I wasn't aware' could be turned around to make it the OP's fault, where 'not made aware' puts the fault on whoever changed the schedule.

Also, maybe the email should say something to the effect of 'that if there are other any other changes which I need to be aware, please contact me ASAP so I can attempt to accommodate the changes'

I agree with the others, especially the part about not doing anything to indicate you're willing to share the blame for this crud. Don't offer to take any shifts to "make up" for what someone else did!

Frustrating, isn't it?

Either way it doesn't matter. I have a copy of my schedule in front of me right now and for sunday there is a big fat X which means off. I even found another copy where there were changes made to another co-workers schedule but that one also shows that I'm off sunday.

I wouldn't volunteer to make up the shift...unless you need the money.

I also wouldn't even hint...that you may have possibly made the error, because you know you didn't.
