Hello Everyone!

I'm heading to my last semester of being a nursing student I'm really excited about it. I plan on moving to california to work as a nurse, and I'm eyeing on the city of beautiful San Francisco. I'm just wondering for those who live in california, especially in SF, is it going to be hard for me to get a job right off when I graduate from school? I live in central illinois, we have 2 big hospitals in town and I've heard from post graduate students that its hard to find job here. Also, when is the perfect time to apply for california license and how long does it take for me to get it once approved/qualified? Can I take it while im still going to school? thank you so much everyone! I'm glad to be part of this community :D

If you plan on moving to CA right after graduation, you might want to apply for your CA license from the beginning. But don't expect a job to jump right out at you. Jobs are scarce in the Bay Area, particularly for new grads. Some have reported up to two years without a job offer. Others find work when they move away from the area.

hi. yeah i understand. I'm also thinking San Jose it doesnt have to be San francisco right off I understand it will take time for me to find a job. for the CA license, what exactly do u mean by from the beginning? thanks for the reply!

San Jose doesn't have work. That is why I left San Jose two years ago. If you are going to work in CA it makes sense to get your license in CA. If you are going to work where you are right now for awhile, then get your first license there, then transfer the license when you move. Good luck.

Hi!

I'm in my undergrad at Michigan State Univ. for my BSN right now & I plan on doing the EXACT same thing when I graduate! Great to hear some feedback on the job availibility & licensing out there... That's a lot to think about. I fell in love with the California coast visiting family last year & it's discouraging to hear that it's one place where nursing jobs aren't abundant.

I would love to hear more if people out there have further info. about out-of-staters wanting to be California nurses! very interesting. :specs: THANKS!

There are lots of threads here about how difficult (impossible) it is for new grads already in CA to find jobs -- some of them are moving out of state to look for work. You may want to look for some of those threads before you make definite plans. Best wishes!
